Community support is essential to what we do.

“At University Ace we think it is important to support Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art because it is one of the most important assets in our community by introducing kids and adults alike to the transforming power of art,” said Shalisa Grantham, company spokesperson.

Members and donors provide essential support that enables us to bring a wide range of visual art programs and exhibitions to the Auburn community. We rely heavily on the generosity of our donors, as a majority of our exhibitions, educational programs, and outreach activities are privately funded. This generosity goes beyond financial support in the forms of participation at events, promoting the museum, and strengthening relationships throughout the community. We welcome and appreciate the financial support of all Auburn alumni, as well as patrons of the arts in East Alabama and beyond.

About Us

“In March of 2012, David and Carolyn Fichtner along with their children Ilga (17), Ina (17), Michael (15), Jonathan (15) and Anne (15) decided to bring Ace Hardware to the Auburn/Opelika community. The Fichtner’s purchased the old “Yellow” building next to the movie theater and have been working on a complete renovation of the interior, exterior, parking lot and landscaping. The renovations are almost complete and the new store, University Ace Hardware, will be opening on February 12, 2013.

David Fichtner manages the day to day operations of the store. “We are so excited to be able to open University Ace Hardware. We look forward to being a true hometown hardware store for Auburn/Opelika and the surrounding communities. We live in this community and we love this community and we are excited to meet the demands for a locally owned convenient hardware store and garden center. Our commitment is to provide a diverse array of products and services with the most ‘helpful folks’ around!”

Artist Statement:

Triad is a sculpture created to identify the power of the number three—the moment of counting to three and the number three used by all people to express “Good Thoughts, Good Words, and Good Deeds” (a phrase referring to the basic tenets of Zoroastrianism, an ancient religion of Greater Iran).

The interplay of elements—form, space, and colors—is seen in a variety of forms as they occur in nature and their relation to the landscape. Between nature, the viewer, and the sculpture, I am condensing time, space, and materials. They are ever-changing.

Komíny-NBS Explore,   2013
Firewood, picnic table, desk, tricycle, paint, and steel pipe

Artist Statement:

Intrigued by the visual patterns and textures of stacked materials, I investigate the bundling, stacking, and clustering of materials into and around forms. This grouping of materials takes shape as furniture, as sculptural installation, and as interior architecture. Over several years I have developed the Komíny series, a body of work that investigates themes of place and identity through the act of stacking firewood.

The Komíny (Czech for “stacks”) that I create incorporate meaningful objects directly into firewood stacks. The embedded artifacts range from books to chairs to tractors, signifying different places, cultures, and histories, depending on the chosen objects and locations.

Artist Statement:

With my Lost Horizon sculptures, I created a point of isolation and insulation that affords viewers an opportunity to focus on space, landscape, and self. This experience shows how we inhabit the atmosphere with our entire bodies while small parts of us touch the landscape.

Sculpture or architecture can be designed to provide moments of introspection—moments that reveal to the viewer what it is to be a human moving through the atmosphere touching the earth’s surface.

Artist Statement:

My work explores relationships between fine art and the subcultures of Americana found in automotive-customizing culture, style-writing culture, and street art—all of which display extremely high technical values developed outside of academia. I identify with these values and am diligent in my attention to the quality and individuality of each work. While working, I think of the customization process that overturns the standardization of automobile mass production into vehicular uniqueness. I continually play with balance, both physical and aesthetic, creating a visual smoothness or sleekness, what I would call “Super Sleek.”

Artist Statement:

In all of my recent work I have culled the rich fantasies, daydreams, misconceptions and experiences of childhood and re-contextualized them through the filters of adulthood, experience and education. This effort has been made in an attempt to plumb the depths of the creative and comprehensive naiveté of youth; to illustrate, in engaging and serio-comic ways, the role of fantasy, “othering” and conflict in nascent self-awareness; and, through the time honored tradition of solipsistic navel gazing, to pick gently at the loose thread of wistful escapism inherent in a quiet, down hill slide into maturity.

Artist Statement:

The majority of my sculpture is concept driven and is often highly viewer interactive. The conceptual component of my work is often derived from some memory that was stirred by the shape of some found object, or from some memento that I have held on to since childhood. These things bring up thoughts and experiences that challenge me and guide me through the creative process. There are elements in much of my larger works that are derived from my love of fantasy, escapism, and pop-culture imagery.

About Us
“Niffer’s Place opened in 1991 with the concept of good food for an excellent value in a fun atmosphere. Keely Beasecker, Auburn University alumni and AU swim alumni has owned Niffer’s Place since founding in 1991. She has surrounded herself with the best team in the business. We are dedicated to providing our customers with excellent customer service, great food and hopefully a fun experience on each visit! Keely loves to hear that people enjoy the food and the friendly service, but the thing she loves to hear most is that people have FUN here!

The character of Niffer, whom you see on our sign and on our menu, is a regular guy with regular food at regular prices, who wants you to EAT HERE! Over the years, specials like our Burger Night, Wing Night, Beer Specials, and Wednesday Kids Eat Free have drawn many loyal customers.

Fun begins with the many unusual decorations, colorful chalkboards and continues with a magician/balloon artist making his rounds at the tables, a play area for the kids and live music on occasion. Our employees are the reason we have such good food, and friendly service and we don’t forget it. They are immortalized at Niffer’s by the fish hanging from, well, everywhere. Each employee has the opportunity to decorate and hang their very own fish in the restaurant to commemorate the part they have played in making Niffer’s something special.

Niffer’s menu began with a wide variety of items to choose from and still has the same variety, but MORE! We have something for everyone from wings, nachos, huge salads, ½ pound burgers, grilled chicken with steamed veggies, pasta, vegetarian dishes, kid’s menu, desserts, and more! The secret to our Great food is that our hamburger meat is never frozen, hand pattied and seasoned with our own special recipe. Our chicken is fresh and marinated making a juicy consistent product. Our Niffer baked beans is a family recipe made fresh right here. Our homemade potato chips are cut, fried and seasoned by our in-house chip expert. The mexicalli dip/dressing is made fresh daily. And we believe you can taste the difference!

Niffer’s Place is an eat-in restaurant, you can get it to-go and we provide catering for casual events. Niffer’s Place opened it’s second restaurant at Lake Martin near Still Waters in Spring of 2002. Niffer’s Place is proud to have a become a hot spot at Lake Martin as well as an Auburn Tradition!”

“Penelope Awaiting Her Chamberlain” rolls in to Auburn

By | Art Experiences, Building Community, Collection Loan, Sculpture | No Comments

Drivers of large trucks may know all too well that finding the right parking spot can sometimes be an adventure. Imagine positioning an antique truck measuring more than 11 feet high by 25 feet long, weighing in at an estimated 12, 000 pounds.

That is the task for the staff of Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, Auburn University, as they begin preparations this month for the upcoming exhibition, “John Himmelfarb: TRUCKS.”

Penelope Awaiting Her Chamberlain is an outdoor sculpture created from a 1946 Chevrolet farm truck and found objects. “This artwork is part of John Himmelfarb’s exhibition and reflects our ongoing interest in outdoor sculpture on the museum’s grounds,” said Marilyn Laufer, director.

This first piece of artwork arrived by tractor trailer at the museum. The driver unloaded his carry and drove the truck to the installation spot on the museum grounds.

In addition to sculpture, the Chicago-based artist depicts the truck in paintings, drawings, and prints. His artwork is found in the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington, DC, and Auburn’s Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.

When asked about his subject matter choice, Himmelfarb noted, “Does anyone ask the artist of still lifes, ‘Why apples?’ Now, I turn the ‘why trucks?’ question around and ask: What do you think about when you see these works?” The artist went on to say his aim in doing so was to encourage the personal discovery that comes from experiencing fine art.

The early installation of Penelope Awaiting Her Chamberlain on the museum grounds is a sneak preview of what you will see when the exhibition opens inside the museum on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015.  The exhibition will continue through Sunday, May 10, 2015.

Climbing the sculpture is strictly prohibited. Visitors to the museum are encouraged to take photographs with the piece and post on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook using the tag, #JCSMTruckStop.

The museum is open to the public for regular hours through Sunday, Dec. 21. The holiday schedule during the university break is: Friday, Dec. 26 to Saturday, Dec. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m., and Friday, Jan. 2 to Saturday Jan. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Welcome to the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art

We welcome you to explore, experience and engage with the visual arts.
