Become A Docent
Being a Docent: What’s in it for me?
JCSM Docents are volunteers trained to guide discussions with visitors, with an emphasis on critical thinking skills. Docents enjoy the benefits of being the first to know about lectures, events, exhibitions and new accessions at JCSM. Training sessions provide insight on how tours work, art appreciation, and museum studies. Curators, scholars, and guest lecturers offer years of experience to share, and warm camaraderie. After training, docents give up to 25 tours a year for school-aged students. The joy of seeing students “get” art is deeply rewarding, and the drive behind the JCSM tour program.
A 6 month program of training will begin in the fall of 2008. Course topics begin with educational approaches, progress to art history, and conclude with tour techniques using the JCSM collection.
