A Little Lunch Music is an informal, come-and-go performance presented by JCSM and coordinated by Patrick McCurry. It features national and international performers as well as professionals and students from Auburn University and the surrounding areas. You can sit in and listen to the entire performance, dine in the Museum Cafe from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., browse the Museum Shop, or explore the galleries.

On Thursday, September 7 from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert by pianist Mary Slaton in the Grand Gallery. The program will feature her arrangements of popular music going back as far as the 1940s. Thanks to gifts from anonymous friends of the series for helping to make this performance possible.
Over the years, MARY SLATON has entertained thousands with her distinctive piano arrangements, and is known throughout the southeast as one of the region’s premier soloists. She knows popular music from the 1930s to present day, and specializes in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s including songs from classic movies, radio, and the canon of great American standards. While earning her Master’s degree at Memphis State University, Mary was a regular soloist at the Hilton and the Hyatt Regency. After Memphis, she lived in the Atlanta area where she played the Omni Hotel, the Hilton, the Atlanta Country Club, the Marietta Country Club, the Atlanta Athletic Club, and the 1848 Restaurant. Through her solo piano career, she has met many famous and colorful characters.
Mary grew up with her six brothers and one sister in Lee County, Alabama, in the Beauregard community on the Lazenby family farm. Her brother remembered her playing by ear at six years old. After earning her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Montevallo, Mary taught choir and piano at Beauregard School, and started bands at Beauregard and at Macon Academy in Tuskegee.
Having returned to Lee County, now in the Auburn-Opelika area, she has been featured at venues such as the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, the Terra Cotta, the Saugahatchee Country Club, and the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at Grand National. She enjoys entering her private students in district and state competitions, and has taught at Southern Union Community College. She leads the Mary Slaton Trio, and founded the East Alabama Community Band in which she serves as coordinator and French horn player.
Mary has one son, an architect in Birmingham. She loves spending time with her two grandchildren and growing flowers in her yard whenever possible.
On Thursday, September 14 from noon to 1:00 p.m., the series will present a free concert by baritone singer Matthew Hoch with pianist Jeremy Samolesky. The program will feature music by Franz Schubert, including his song cycle, “Schwanengesang.” Thanks to gifts from anonymous friends of the series for helping to make this performance possible.
MATTHEW HOCH is Associate Professor of Voice and Coordinator of Voice Studies at Auburn University. Prior to coming to Auburn in 2012, he spent six years as Assistant Professor of Voice and Coordinator of Voice Studies at Shorter College. Dr. Hoch’s students have gone on to successful careers in both classical and musical theatre genres and have won awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council, the National Association of Teachers of Singing (MTNA), the Music Teachers National Association (NATS), the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, the Vann Vocal Institute, and others.
Dr. Hoch is the 2016 winner of the Van L. Lawrence Fellowship, awarded jointly by the Voice Foundation and NATS. He is the author of three books, including A Dictionary for the Modern Singer (2014), Welcome to Church Music & The Hymnal 1982 (2015), and Voice Secrets: 100 Performance Strategies for the Advanced Singer (2016). His articles have appeared in Journal of Singing, Journal of Voice, Opera Journal, Choral Journal, Chorister, and Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians. From 2008-2016, he served as Editor-in-Chief of VOICEPrints: Journal of the New York Singing Teachers’ Asociation.
Dr. Hoch has presented his research at national and international conferences, including the International Congress of Voice Teachers; Pan-European Voice Conference; Pan-American Vocology Association; NATS; Voice and Speech Trainers Association; MTNA; National Opera Association; College Music Society; Hawaii International Conference for the Arts and Humanities; Society for American Music; National Association for Music Education; Acoustical Society of America; International Horn Symposium; the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada; Voice Foundation Symposium in Philadelphia; and the International Symposium on Singing and Song in St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. He holds the Bachelor of Music from Ithaca College, Master of Music from The Hartt School, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the New England Conservatory.

JEREMY SAMOLESKY, a native of Manitoba, Canada, currently serves as Professor of Piano and Coordinator of Piano Studies at Auburn University. Known for his passion for both solo and collaborative performances, he has appeared in concert as a soloist and chamber pianist throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, including a full recital at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., broadcast nationally on NPR’s Performance Today.
Dr. Samolesky achieved the rare distinction of graduating with two doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music in New York: a feat permitted just once before in the school’s history. Recent appearances include lecturer and soloist at the World Piano Conference in Serbia (2013), a performance tour of music conservatories in Colombia and Ecuador (2014), Thailand and Malaysia (2015), and Artist Faculty at the Orfeo Music Festival in Italy (2016, 2017).
Praised by critics as “brilliant,” “distinguished,” and “full of intensity and drama,” Dr. Samolesky’s debut solo CD was released by Centaur Records in 2015. His subsequent CD, with clarinetist David Odom, Max Reger: The Complete Works for Clarinet and Piano, was released by Albany Records in the fall of 2016. He was recently selected as the 2016-17 Winner of The American Prize Competition in Piano Performance, Professional Division.
As a teacher, Dr. Samolesky’s students are frequent competition winners and regularly receive prestigious scholarships and assistantships at renowned graduate music programs throughout the U.S. For his achievements, he was awarded the 2012 “Excellence in Teaching” award from Auburn University.
On Thursday, September 21 from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert by soprano Kathleen Buccleugh with pianist Laurie Middaugh. The program will feature music by Joaquín Rodrigo, Gabriel Fauré, Richard Strauss, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Leonard Bernstein, and selections from musical theater. Soprano KATHLEEN FARRAR BUCCLEUGH, described as “purely lovely” and “delightfully touching” by The Tuscaloosa News and praised for her “light, pure tone” and “totally natural” comedic acting by artsBHAM.com, is an accomplished young artist with a performance history reflecting her versatility in opera, oratorio, musical theatre and recital repertoire.
Ms. Buccleugh spent summer 2017 in residence with Utah Festival Opera. There, she performed Lady Jane Seymour in Rex, which was specially revised by lyricist Sheldon Harnick for the company’s production; and Isabel (Mabel cover) in The Pirates of Penzance. She won the 9th annual Michael Ballam Concorso Lirico International Opera Competition on July 25 and was awarded a trip to Alessandria, Italy, to compete in the finals of the Concorso Internazionale di Musica “Cappucilli – Patané – Respighi,” to be held fall 2017.
In October, she makes her Mobile Opera debut as she returns to the role of Despina in Mozart’s opera, Così fan tutte, under the baton of Maestro Curtis Tucker. Last season, she made two company debuts: Ines in Il trovatore with St. Petersburg Opera, and Giannetta (Adina cover) in L’elisir d’amore with Opera Birmingham.
In 2015, Ms. Buccleugh performed Rose Lennox (Lily cover) in Red Mountain Theatre Company’s The Secret Garden and was a featured soloist in pop-up concerts with Opera Birmingham. She also performed scenes as Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) and Lakmé with Opera Breve at OPERA America’s National Opera Center in New York City. In 2014-2015, she made a role and company debut as Frasquita in New Rochelle Opera’s Carmen, and she performed Giannetta and covered Adina in Atlanta-based Peach State Opera’s The Elixir of Love. Ms. Buccleugh additionally covered Margot in Romberg’s operetta The Desert Song with Birmingham Music Club.
Other career highlights include Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Breve; Fantine cover and featured ensemble member in Red Mountain Theatre Company’s Les Misérables; and a residency with the Natchez Festival of Music, where she was Lilli Vanessi/Kate cover in Kiss Me, Kate and a featured soprano in concert performances, such as an Irving Berlin program.
Ms. Buccleugh is an impassioned oratorio soloist and recitalist. Last season, she was soprano soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Canterbury Church Choir, featuring members of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Through solo recitals and performances in various venues across the Southeast, she has been able to explore music by some of today’s top American composers, including Libby Larsen, Juliana Hall and John Musto.
LAURIE MIDDAUGH received both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in piano performance from the University of Montevallo studying piano with Ms. Joan Cowan and Dr. Anthony Pattin, and the Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Alabama studying piano with Mrs. Amanda Penick. Dr. Middaugh’s interest in collaborative piano began as a freshman at the University of Montevallo when she began playing for lessons and recitals for fellow students as part of her scholarship. In addition to her education in piano performance, Dr. Middaugh has also received coaching in collaborative piano in master classes with Dalton Baldwin, John Steele Ritter, and Dennis Helmrich. She was a student at the American Institute of Music Study in Graz, Austria, where she coached lieder with Betty Bullock and Nico de Villiers, and piano with Charlene Harb, and participated in the Music Directors Intensive at Goodspeed Opera House.
Dr. Middaugh has served as staff accompanist at the University of Montevallo for over 20 years collaborating with student, faculty, guest artist recitals, and operas. She has collaborated with area professionals, worked with Opera Birmingham, regional Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, the Alabama Symphony, and Alabama Ballet. Dr. Middaugh is also organist and choir director at the Anglican Church of the Holy Comforter in Montevallo where she lives with her husband, professor emeritus of voice, Dr. Bennie Middaugh.
On Thursday, September 28 from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert by cellist Laura Usiskin with pianist Ting Li. Cellist LAURA USISKIN has performed throughout North America and Europe in such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Weill Hall, Palazzo Chigi Saracini, Barge Music, and many others. Recent performances include concertos of Dvořák and Takemitsu with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra and performances of the complete Bach Suites in Los Angeles and Connecticut. She has held orchestral positions with the New Haven Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, and is currently Principal Cello of the Orchestra Iowa.
From 2011-13, Usiskin served as Founder and Executive Director of the Montgomery Music Project, a program that provides intensive music instruction to underserved children in Montgomery. She currently resides in Birmingham, where she is on faculty at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Birmingham-Southern College, and STEP Birmingham. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and Behavior from Columbia University, Master of Music from The Juilliard School, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the Yale School of Music.

After earning her Bachelor’s degree, double-majoring in piano performance and vocal performance at Sichuan Conservatory of Music in China, in 2009, TING LI was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Master’s degree program studying piano at New Mexico State University. With the encouragement and teaching by Dr. Laura Spitzer, Ting went on to become the first Asian pianist to win the Music Teachers National Association southwest-region piano competition.
In 2012, on the recommendation of Professor Anita Pontremoli, Ting was admitted to the Collaborative Piano program of the Cleveland Institute of Music. She actively performed in concerts and recording sessions and as piano faculty in music camps hosted by William Preucil (Concertmaster, The Cleveland Orchestra) and Richard Weiss (First Assistant Principal Cello, The Cleveland Orchestra). In 2013, Ting was invited to perform at the Kent/Blossom Music Festival. Ting is currently the music director of “TingTing’s chamber group” from Silicon Beach Arts Council in Los Angeles.
On Thursday, October 5, from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert by pianist Jeremy Samolesky. As a soloist, DAN KYZER prides himself on giving audiences across the US an experience that is both introspective and uplifting. His roots are in the bluegrass and blues music he played as a teenager in Jackson, Mississippi. As a high school senior, he discovered the classical guitar and began studying under Dr. John Ingwerson at Hinds Community College. After finishing his undergraduate work at the University of Southern Mississippi with Dr. Nicholas Ciraldo, Dan earned a scholarship to the New England Conservatory (NEC) where he studied with world-renowned guitarist Eliot Fisk. While in Boston, Dan maintained a studio at the Boston School of Guitar and performed with groups like the Boston Metro Opera and MIT Women’s Chorus. He also played concerts at venues like the Wood’s Hole Library and NEC’s Williams Hall. He interned with the Boston GuitarFest and worked with Guitar and Friends, a non-profit guitar organization.
After earning a Master of Music with Academic Honors from NEC, Dan moved to Denton, Texas, to begin doctoral studies at the University of North Texas (UNT) under the tutelage of Thomas Johnson. An important contributor to the Dallas-Ft. Worth classical guitar scene, he serves on the faculty at Mountain View College, directing the school’s guitar ensemble and the Mountain View College Guitar Festival, now in its fourth year. He has played solo recitals and events at some of the most prestigious venues in the area, including the Dallas Museum of Art, Kimbell Art Museum, Voertman Hall, Perot Museum, and many others. His chamber music collaborations include Fort Worth Opera, Orpheus Chamber Singers, and UNT’s University Singers. He has served as an adjudicator at the Lone Star Guitar Festival, Mountain View Guitar Festival, and Collin College Guitar Competition.
Dan holds prizes from several national guitar competitions including first prizes from the New Orleans International Guitar Festival and the Southern Guitar Festival, and second prize from the Sierra Nevada Guitar Festival. Upcoming performances include a tour through the midwest and southeast in February 2018, an ensemble performance with the Allegro Guitar Series, and another collaboration with the Fort Worth Opera. Dan lives in Corinth, Texas, with his wife Abigail Chaplin-Kyzer, an accomplished piano teacher, musicologist, and performer. Their latest collaboration is the Concerto in D Major by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

International Guitarist and Pedagogue EDOARDO CATEMARIO was born in Naples, Italy, and started his music studies at the age of five. He has been studying guitar with Salvatore Canino, Antimo Pedata, Jose Tomas, and Maria Luisa Anido, and analysis with Titina De Fazio and the South American composers Leo Brouwer and Oscar Roberto Casares. At the age of 11 he gave his first solo recital.
His shows his versatility by passing from the Romantic repertoire (played on original instruments) through the Baroque and 20th-century music, and to contemporary music and vanguards. His repertoire includes a vast amount of solo works, almost all of the chamber repertoire, and 42 Concertos for guitar and orchestra.
He has won first prizes in national and international competitions including in 1991 the prestigious Andres Segovia guitar competition in Almunecar, Granada, and in 1992 the Alessandria International Competition.
Catemario has performed in concerts, broadcasts and major festivals in countries such as Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland, the United States, South America, Australia, and the United Kingdom. He has appeared at venues such as Grosser Saal of the Wiener Musikverein (Vienna), Auditorio Nacional (Madrid), St John’s Smith Square and Royal Academy of Music (London), Associazione Scarlatti (Napoli), Amici della musica di Palermo, Perugia e Padova, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York), Cite de la musique (Parigi), Teatro Coliseo (Buenos Aires), Sidney Meir Bowl and Town Hall (Melbourne), and MusikHalle (Hamburg), and has broadcast from TVE2 (Spain), RTF3 (France), and RAI1 and RAI3 (Italy) among others.
He has premiered several compositions (some dedicated to him), including El Kalasha de Avalokitesvara by Eduardo Morales Caso, Drei lieder by Alexander Mullenbach, Cuadernos de Danzas by Mauricio Sotelo, Memorie di una maschera by Patrizio Marrone, Carpe Diem by Gerard Drozd, and I racconti di Mamma Orca by Roberto De Simone.
He accepts invitations as guest soloist by orchestras such as: Wiener Akademie, Orquesta de Andorra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Accademia Bizantina, Orchestra della Toscana, Orchestra di Stato del Messico, Orchestra filarmonica Italiana, and Solisti di Fiesole, under the direction of famous conductors such as Martin Haselbok, Oleg Caetani, Michael Helmrat, Inma Shara, Marzio Conti, Enrique Batiz, Nicola Paszkowski, and Ottavio Dantone among others.
Apart from his work as a soloist, Catemario is in demand as a chamber musician and has collaborated with many of the world’s leading musicians including Kurt Wiedmer, Alain Meunier, Franco Mezzena, the Vega String Quartet, Silesian String Quartet, Massimo Quarta, Roberto Fabbriciani, Mario Ancillotti, Sylvie Gazeau, Antonello Farulli, Gabriele Cassone, Vittorio and Duccio Ceccanti, Nicoletta Curiel, Vincent Aguettant, and Gabriella Costa Maluberti.
Catemario’s CD recordings include those with DECCA records, ARTS Music, Koch Schwann and EMI which have been awarded with critics’ prizes such as Joker by Crescendo (Belgium), Choice of the Month CD Classica (Italy), and 5 Stars Musica. In January 2004 his recording of the Concerto n1 by Giuliani was attached to the BBC Music Magazine, and in January 2006 he was featured on the the cover of Guitar Magazine.
He has held Master Classes in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, USA, United Kingdom, Australia and Austria. From 2001 to 2007 he was invited to the Salzburg’s Mozarteum to give a course during its Sommer Akademie. Between 1993 and 2001 he was titular in the course of interpretation at the Conservatoire International de Paris.
Catemario owns and plays on instruments by great masters of the Spanish school dated between 1890 and 1935, namely Garcia, Simplicio, Jose Ramirez I, Pascual Viudes, Ibanez and Marin.

The program will feature music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Jacques Ibert, Ryo Noda, and David Maslanka. A native of Moscow, Russia, NIKOLAI KLOTCHKOV started playing classical saxophone at the age of twelve. In 2016, he was a winner in the Alabama Federation of Music Club’s Collegiate Scholarships audition and won alternate at the Alabama Music Teachers National Association Performance Competition. Before moving to the United States, he received awards in both local and international youth music competitions, and studied saxophone with Aleksey Volkov at Ippolitov-Ivanov State Pedagogical Institute.
Now a senior at Auburn University with plans for graduate school, Nikolai is double majoring in Music Performance and Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Neuroscience, Exercise Science, and Computer Science. He applies the knowledge from his interdisciplinary studies to his own performance practice, but is equally concerned with outreach. Through his research of musicians’ physiology and the cognitive processes involved in music performance and perception, he hopes to create better methods to teach beginning instrumentalists and to improve the performance of mature musicians.
Nikolai currently studies under Dr. Michael Pendowski and performs with the Tiger Saxophone Quartet and the Auburn University Concert and Symphonic bands.
MARI ITO is from Tokyo, Japan. She has won honors at competitions on the international level including bronze at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Asia, and second place at the North Kanto Piano Competition. She was the Yamaha Music Foundation Scholarship Winner in 2008, received the Category Encouragement Award for category G from the Piano Teachers National Association Piano Competition in Japan, and won the Outstanding Performer award in the upper college division of the Georgia Music Teachers Association.
Mari began taking piano lessons at age 3 and advanced through several schools of music near Tokyo. In 2005, Mari enrolled at the Toho High School of Music where she studied with Tsunemi Naraba and Mina Fukagawa. She continued her studies at the Toho Gakuen College of Music graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance in 2012. Other teachers that Mari has studied with are Mikhail Voskresensky, Ruvim Ostrovsky, and Choong Mo Kang.
In 2014, she competed in the Atlanta Music Teachers Association’s Romantic & Impressionistic Festival and Competition, where she received first prize in the Impressionistic category and second prize in the Romantic category. She had a solo recital sponsored by Kawai Musical Instruments. In 2015 she was selected as one of the competitors in the 9th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. She was winner of Orchestra Noir Concerto Competition in 2016. Mari has an upcoming concert with Orchestra Noir in Atlanta in May 2018.
Mari recently completed both the Master’s Degree and the Artist Diploma programs at Columbus State University’s (CSU) Schwob School of Music where she studied with Professor Alexander Kobrin. She was a winner of the graduate division of CSU’s concerto competition in 2014 for which she performed Prokofiev’s 3rd Piano Concerto. Currently she works as a staff accompanist at the Schwob School of Music.
On Thursday, November 2 from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert in the Grand Gallery by Plains 2, a duo featuring trombonist Matthew Wood and pianist Joshua Pifer. The program will feature music by Marcel-Samuel Rousseau, Norman Bolter, Lawrence Borden, Brad Edwards, Richard Strauss, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Astor Piazzolla. MATTHEW WOOD is Associate Professor of Low Brass at Auburn University. His duties include maintaining the trombone, euphonium, and tuba studios as well as conducting the trombone choir and tuba/euphonium ensemble.
A native of Columbia, Missouri, Dr. Wood received both a BM (Summa Cum Laude) and MM from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a DMA from the University of Texas-Austin.
Before moving to Auburn, Dr. Wood was an active performer, educator, and clinician in both the Austin and San Antonio areas. He performed with San Antonio-based BrassFX and the Austin City Brass as well as with the Austinbones trombone quartet. He also performed and recorded with several pop, rock, and latin groups including Drew Smith and His Band. During his time in Austin, Dr. Wood taught in the Austin, Round Rock, and Pflugerville Independent School Districts and served on the faculty of the Austin Chamber Music Center and the Texas Brass Camp.
Dr. Wood was a member of the University of Texas-Austin Trombone Choir that won the 2002 and 2007 Emory Remington Trombone Choir Competition sponsored by the International Trombone Association. He has also been a finalist in the ITA Lewis Van Haney Mock Orchestral Audition Competition.
His principal teachers are Nathaniel Brickens, Professor of Trombone at the University of Texas-Austin and Timothy Myers, Principal Trombone, St. Louis Symphony.
As a pedagogue and performer, DR. JOSHUA PIFER believes that music is a tool for inspiration and takes the greatest joy in his students’ accomplishments. He appears as guest artist and clinician at universities, conferences, and concert series, and has adjudicated over 25 festivals and competitions. As a clinician, his favorite presentations include “The Piano Music of Alexander Tcherepnin”, “Arm Usage and Injury Prevention in Piano Playing”, and “Teaching Improvisation, It’s Not That Scary”.
As a performer, Dr. Pifer has premiered works by 21st-Century composers Cormier, Aftab, Shields, Townsend, and Clearfield, and is an advocate for the piano music of Alexander Tcherepnin. His first CD, “Alexander Tcherepnin My Favorite Piano Works”, is a showcase co-produced with Chandler Bridges, a Grammy Award winning recording engineer. He performs with the Auburn University Faculty Jazz Ensemble and co-founded the duo, Plains2. During the 2017 season, solo and collaborative performances will take Dr. Pifer to Canada, Taiwan, Missouri, North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Michigan, and New York.
Dr. Pifer joined Auburn University in the fall of 2011. There, he teaches Piano Skills, Functional Piano, Music Skills, and Applied Piano. During summer, he serves as piano faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Festival. Prior to 2011, Dr. Pifer taught applied piano at Florida State University and the Orfeo Music Festival in Vipiteno, Italy. Dr. Pifer currently serves as the VP/President Elect for the Alabama Music Teachers Association and is a strong advocate for increasing professional music opportunities for collegiate students throughout the state.
Dr. Pifer holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in piano performance with honors from the University of Southern California with secondary foci in piano pedagogy, choral conducting, and music history. He has a Master’s in piano performance from Miami University and Bachelor’s degrees in piano performance, organ performance, and pre-medicine from Wittenberg University. His major teachers include Antoinette Perry, Robert Thomas, and Robert Howat. When not teaching or performing, Joshua spends time with his family playing tennis or practicing culinary arts.
On Thursday, November 9 from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert by clarinetist Patricia Crispino with pianist Beibei Lin. The program will feature music by Robert Muczynski, Darius Milhaud, Norbert Burgmuller, and Francis Poulenc. Gifts from Phyllis Stanaland, Malcom & Ruth Crocker, and anonymous friends of the series have helped to make this performance possible.

PATRICIA CRISPINO has performed with Theatre Tallahassee, the Solon Center of the Arts Opera, Solon Philharmonic, Waco Symphony Orchestra, Austin Chamber Players, and Yakima Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed for the Cleveland Composers Guild, Waco Symphony Sunday Sounds Series, and can be heard in the short film Blue Disquietude.
Dr. Crispino graduated from Florida State University with a Doctor of Music in Clarinet Performance. Prior to attending FSU, she completed an Artist Diploma in Clarinet Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music, a Master of Music in both Clarinet Performance and Wind Conducting from Baylor University, and a Bachelor of Music in Woodwind Performance from Central Washington University.
During her time at Baylor, Dr. Crispino was a graduate teaching assistant, a recipient of the Larry Vanlandingham Outstanding Instrumental Graduate Student Award, and concerto competition winner. In November of 2010, Patricia performed Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto with the Baylor Symphony Orchestra.
Past clarinet mentors include Jonathan Holden, Frank Kowalsky, Franklin Cohen, Richard Shanley, and Joseph Brooks; past conducting mentors include J. Eric Wilson and Colin McKenzie.
Patricia presently freelances in North Florida, directs the local clarinet choir Tallahassee Breezes, and teaches in the Tallahassee area. She is also an Ophthalmic Technician at Southern Vitreoretinal Associates.
Chinese American pianist BEIBEI LIN maintains an active schedule as an educator and performer. Dr. Lin debuted as a soloist with the MasterWorks Festival Orchestra at age seventeen, performing Prokofiev’s First Piano Concerto. Significant recent performances include collaborative appearances at the 2016 International Double Reed Society Conference and a solo appearance at the 2017 Women Composers Festival of Hartford. She has presented guest artist recitals and masterclasses throughout the United States.
Dr. Lin currently serves as the Secretary of the Columbus Music Teachers Association. She served as an adjudicator for the 2016 Florida Junior and Senior Music Teachers National Association Piano Competitions as well as the 2017 Alabama Music Teachers Association State Piano Auditions.
As an active researcher, Dr. Lin’s work on piano pedagogy trends in 21st-Century China has been presented at the 2017 National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Lombard, Illinois. An article on the same topic has recently been accepted for publication by The Frances Clark Piano Pedagogy Forum. She has appeared multiple times as a performer, presenter, and panelist at The Sport Professionals’ Experience and Research Conference, speaking on interdisciplinary topics relating to music and sports performance.
Dr. Lin currently teaches at Columbus State University. She received her Doctor of Music in Piano Performance from Florida State University in 2016.

A native of Orange County, California, pianist Vijay Venkatesh has been hailed in concert review for his “sublime phrasing, tremendous and powerful virtuosity, beautiful lyricism, and mature and sensitive interpretation” in performances “equaling that of Radu Lupu, Itzhak Perlman, and Andres Segovia.” At age 14, he made his orchestral debut with the South Coast Symphony. In addition, he has performed with the Symphony Orchestras of Seattle, Vienna, Roanoke, USC Thornton, Eastern Connecticut, YMF Debut, UCI, Pasadena, Rio Hondo, Transylvania, and the Brevard Music Center.
He has collaborated with such celebrated conductors as Ludovic Morlot, David Lockington, David Stewart Wiley, Toshiyuki Shimada, Ken Lam, Robert Lehrbaumer, Kimo Furumoto, and more. His 2017-18 season contains recitals on the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series, chamber music at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and a performance with the Boulder Chamber Orchestra.
Winner of Grand Prizes in the Classics Alive Artists competition, Frances Walton Chamber Music Competition, Seattle Symphony International Piano Competition and the Los Angeles Music Center’s Spotlight Awards, he was named a Davidson Fellow, honored with an award ceremony and reception at the Library of Congress. A 2009 alumnus of NPR’s “From the Top” and 2009 Winner of NFAA YoungARTS, he took 1st Prizes in the 2011 Zimmerli International Solo Piano Competition, 2004 San Jose International Piano Competition, 2007 World Piano Pedagogue Competition, and 2nd prize in the 2007 Waring International Piano Competition. He has appeared as guest artist at the Aspen, Brevard, Banff, Vienna, Sarasota, and Newport Music Festivals.
Principal professors have included Norman Krieger, Jeffrey Kahane, and Dr. Sarkis Baltaian. He is a recipient of the 2015 Parnassus Society Prize, 2014 Birte Moller Young Artist Award, and the 2013 Thornton Music Faculty Award from the University of Southern California graduating as a 2017 Discovery Scholar.
He now pursues a Masters at Indiana School of Music with professor Norman Krieger as a recipient of the Barbara and David Jacobs Fellowship. He is currently managed by Classics Alive Artists.
On Thursday, December 30 from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert in the Grand Gallery by classical guitarist Kevin Manderville. The program will feature music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Gerardo Tamez, Phillip Houghton, John Doan, Pieter Van der Staak, and others. Gifts from Jack & Jane Brown and from anonymous friends of the series have helped to make this performance possible.
Kevin Manderville began his classical guitar studies at the age of eighteen with James Chandler. He received the Bachelor of Music degree from Stetson University, where he studied with Stephen Robinson. He also received the Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees from Florida State University under the tutelage of renowned pedagogue Bruce Holzman. In addition, Dr. Manderville has studied in master classes with some of today’s most prominent guitarists, including Sergio and Odair Assad, Manuel Barrueco, Eliot Fisk, Roland Dyens, and Oscar Ghiglia. He has won prizes in several international competitions, including first prize at the Concours International de Guitare de Lachine, second prize at the Rantucci International Guitar Competition and consecutive top prizes at the Columbus Guitar Symposium Competition.
His performances as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, and former member of the Tantalus Quartet have taken him throughout North America and Europe, including appearances in such major cities as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Montreal, Cologne, New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta and Orlando. He has also performed at major venues, concert series and festivals including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Guitar Foundation of America International Convention, Iserlohn International Guitar Symposium, 2nd Acadia International Guitar Festival, Hamilton International Guitar Festival, Lone Star Guitar Festival, Columbus State University Guitar Symposium, University of Louisville International Guitar Festival, New York Guitar Seminar, and the Lachine International Music Festival. Committed to the performance of new music, he has premiered several works including those written for him. His debut CD, titled “Through the Centuries,” was released in the fall of 2010 on Clear Note.
A dedicated teacher, Dr. Manderville served as a teaching assistant at Florida State University for three years. He has been on the faculty of Thomas University, Tallahassee Community College, Bainbridge College, and the Stetson University Community School of Music. While living in New York, he taught at Medgar Evers College, the Amadeus Conservatory of Music, and initiated an after-school guitar program for Manhattan Youth. Kevin Manderville currently resides in Montgomery, Alabama, where he directs the classical guitar program at Carver Elementary Arts Magnet School and is on the faculty at Huntingdon College.

On Thursday, December 7 from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert in the Grand Gallery. Featured will be music for horn-piano duo and music for horn trio. The duo is hornist William Schaffer and pianist Joshua Pifer. Members of the Auburn University Horn Ensemble playing trio music are Andrew Kirk, Jonythan Tribble, Tripp Gulledge, and Sam Becker, all students of Dr. Schaffer. The program will include music by Anton Reicha, Eugène Bozza, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Peter Schickele. Gifts from anonymous friends of the series have helped to make this performance possible.
Dr. BILL SCHAFFER is Assistant Professor of Horn and Music theory in the Auburn University Department of Music. His duties include teaching the horn studio, coaching small ensembles and horn ensemble, Sophomore Theory and Ear Training, and upper level theory courses. His teachers included Philip Farkas, Michael Hatfield, Jack Masarie, and one year of compostion with Roque Cordero.
Dr. Schaffer has maintained an active performance schedule since the early 1980s. His orchestral experience includes groups such as the Peoria Symphony and Twin City Ballet (IL), the National Opera Company, Charlotte Symphony and North Carolina Symphony (NC), and the LaGrange Symphony (GA). He currently serves as principal horn in Sinfonia Gulf Coast (FL). He has also remained active giving solo recitals regularly since the early 1990’s and performing with chamber ensembles. He has published horn ensemble works that include arrangements and historical works, as well as original works for both horn ensemble and brass ensembles.
Dr. Schaffer has been teaching since developing a large private studio in the Washington D.C. area in the 1980s. He has taught in both the public schools and at the University level with teaching experience that spans every level from Kindergarten to Graduate school. Members of the AUBURN UNIVERSITY HORN ENSEMBLE are students of Dr. William Schaffer. A native of Huntsville, Alabama, SAMUEL BECKER is a music education Freshman. He is a graduate of Grissom High School where he played horn in concert ensembles and trumpet in the jazz band. He performs with the Symphonic Band, Marching Band, and Woodwind Quintet. TRIPP GULLEDGE is a junior majoring in horn performance and music education, with a minor in Spanish. He is the oldest of three children and graduated eighth in his class from Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama. Tripp is involved with the leadership of the Auburn Wesley Foundation and works as a student pastor at three rural churches. ANDREW KIRK is a music education junior from Auburn. Andrew plays in ensembles at Auburn and has marched with the Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps since 2015. JONYTHAN TRIBBLE from West Memphis, Arkansas, is a junior majoring in music education. He serves as first horn in the Symphonic Band and is a section leader in the Marching Band. He is becoming a worship leader at Church of the Highlands in Opelika.
On Thursday, December 15 from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert in the Auditorium by the Auburn Music Club Singers. The group will present a choral program of traditional Christmas music and featuring composers including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Wesley D. Peters, Emmett Kennedy, Victor C. Johnson, Herbert Chappel, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Peter Gruber. Pianist Mary Slaton will take requests from the audience for Christmas carols. Gifts from anonymous friends of the series have helped to make this performance possible.
The stated objectives of the Auburn Music Club, formed in 1979, were “to encourage interest and participation in all areas of music and to promote music in the community, homes, and local schools.” At one of its first meetings, members organized the AUBURN MUSIC CLUB SINGERS to meet and perform for the club or for schools and nursing homes.
In 1991, PHYLLIS GAUKER earned a Master of Music in choral conducting from Auburn University under Dr Thomas Smith. Retiring from the City of Auburn Environmental Services Department in 2002, she began directing the Singers, promising that every year she would expose them to serious choral repertoire. Growing up in Arlington, Virginia, Phyllis took advantage of the cultural activities in the nation’s capital. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in music from William & Mary in 1962 and taught high school choral music in Richmond, Virginia, and in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.
ELIZABETH RUTLAND was recently named Teacher of the Year by the Alabama Music Teachers’ Association. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from Auburn University, maintains a private studio of piano students, and is a published composer. She is retired organist at Grace Methodist Church, and has been accompanist for the Music Club Singers for many years.
Ohio native and flutist JANET H. SANDERS earned Bachelor’s degrees in music and education from Ohio Wesleyan University. She holds the Certificate with Honors from the Kodaly Musical Training Institute and earned her Masters from New England Conservatory of Music. She has taught in Ohio, Massachusetts, Guam, Georgia, and Alabama.
Over the years, MARY SLATON has entertained thousands with her distinctive piano arrangements. She knows popular music from the 1930s to present day, including songs from classic movies, radio, and the canon of great American standards. Mary has played top venues in Memphis, Atlanta, and home in the Auburn/Opelika area.
JACQUIRUTH KEMP STOVER has spent some of her favorite moments in life singing in and directing choirs. She has served as minister of music at several churches, leading dramatic arts and worship and directing adult and children’s choirs. She currently holds that position at Franklin Road Baptist Church in LaGrange, Georgia.
