On Thursdays at Noon, make a lunch date with the finest musicians from our region and beyond. A Little Lunch Music is an informal, come-and-go performance presented by JCSM and coordinated by Patrick McCurry. It features national and international performers as well as professionals and students from Auburn University and the surrounding areas. You can sit in and listen to the entire performance, dine in the Museum Cafe from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., browse the Museum Shop, or explore the galleries.

// January 11 // baritone MATTHEW HOCH with pianist JEREMY SAMOLESKY

On Thursday, January 11, from noon to 1:00 pm in the Auditorium, the series will present a free concert in the Auditorium by baritone Matthew Hoch with pianist Jeremy Samolesky. The duo will present a program of music by women composers, including Clara Schumann, Nadia Boulanger, and Jocelyne Binet. Matthew Hoch

MATTHEW HOCH is Associate Professor of Voice and Coordinator of Voice Studies at Auburn University. Prior to coming to Auburn in 2012, he spent six years as Assistant Professor of Voice and Coordinator of Voice Studies at Shorter College. Dr. Hoch’s students have gone on to successful careers in both classical and musical theatre genres and have won awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council, the National Association of Teachers of Singing (MTNA), the Music Teachers National Association (NATS), the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, the Vann Vocal Institute, and others.

Dr. Hoch is the 2016 winner of the Van L. Lawrence Fellowship, awarded jointly by the Voice Foundation and NATS. He is the author of three books, including A Dictionary for the Modern Singer (2014), Welcome to Church Music & The Hymnal 1982 (2015), and Voice Secrets: 100 Performance Strategies for the Advanced Singer (2016). His articles have appeared in Journal of Singing, Journal of Voice, Opera Journal, Choral Journal, Chorister, and Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians. From 2008-2016, he served as Editor-in-Chief of VOICEPrints: Journal of the New York Singing Teachers’ Asociation.

Dr. Hoch has presented his research at national and international conferences, including the International Congress of Voice Teachers; Pan-European Voice Conference; Pan-American Vocology Association; NATS; Voice and Speech Trainers Association; MTNA; National Opera Association; College Music Society; Hawaii International Conference for the Arts and Humanities; Society for American Music; National Association for Music Education; Acoustical Society of America; International Horn Symposium; the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada; Voice Foundation Symposium in Philadelphia; and the International Symposium on Singing and Song in St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. He holds the Bachelor of Music from Ithaca College, Master of Music from The Hartt School, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the New England Conservatory.

Jeremy Samolesky

JEREMY SAMOLESKY, a native of Manitoba, Canada, currently serves as Professor of Piano and Coordinator of Piano Studies at Auburn University. Known for his passion for both solo and collaborative performances, he has appeared in concert as a soloist and chamber pianist throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, including a full recital at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., broadcast nationally on NPR’s Performance Today.

Dr. Samolesky achieved the rare distinction of graduating with two doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music in New York: a feat permitted just once before in the school’s history. Recent appearances include lecturer and soloist at the World Piano Conference in Serbia (2013), a performance tour of music conservatories in Colombia and Ecuador (2014), Thailand and Malaysia (2015), and Artist Faculty at the Orfeo Music Festival in Italy (2016, 2017).

Praised by critics as “brilliant,” “distinguished,” and “full of intensity and drama,” Dr. Samolesky’s debut solo CD was released by Centaur Records in 2015. His subsequent CD, with clarinetist David Odom, Max Reger: The Complete Works for Clarinet and Piano, was released by Albany Records in the fall of 2016. He was recently selected as the 2016-17 Winner of The American Prize Competition in Piano Performance, Professional Division.

As a teacher, Dr. Samolesky’s students are frequent competition winners and regularly receive prestigious scholarships and assistantships at renowned graduate music programs throughout the U.S. For his achievements, he was awarded the 2012 “Excellence in Teaching” award from Auburn University.

On Thursday, January 18, from noon to 1:00 pm in the Auditorium, the series will present a free concert by lyric soprano Melanie Williams with guitarist Alan Goldspiel. The duo will present music by Matyas Seiber, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, John W. Duarte, Mordechai Gebirtig, George Gershwin, and Mark Warshawsky, in addition to compositions and arrangements by Dr. Goldspiel. MELANIE WILLIAMS enjoys an active career performing solo, chamber, opera and choral repertoire.  Melanie Williams’s “big, beautiful voice” and “captivating, dramatic, and sensitive performance” have been hailed by critics;  she has received positive reviews of her stage and concert work, as well as her recordings with the LeBaron Trio.  The lyric soprano earned the Masters of Music and the Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at Louisiana State University, where she studied with Metropolitan Opera soprano Martino Arroyo and New York City Opera tenor Robert Grayson. A regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions, and a finalist in the Birmingham Opera and Mobile Opera competitions, Williams’ most notable operatic roles include Papagena in Opera Birmingham’s Die Zauberflöte, Berta in the company’s production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and Olympia in Baton Rouge Opera’s Le Contes d’Hoffman. She has also sung several leading roles in operas by Gian Carlo Menotti with Alabama OperaWorks, including Monica in The Medium, Lucy in The Telephone, and Laetitia in The Old Maid and the Thief. Other leading roles with the company include “The Girl” in the Jack Beeson opera Hello, Out There, Valerie in the American premiere of the Amy Cheney Beach opera The Cabildo and the title roles in Gustav Holst’s Savitri and the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Iolanthe. She was honored to sing “Queen of the Night” with the University of Montevallo Opera Theatre in their 2015 production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Williams has twice traveled to England as soprano soloist for the International Cathedral Music Festival, performing in London, Canterbury and Salisbury. Concert appearances in the Southeast include engagements with the Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama and Kingsport Symphonies, as well as solo appearances with the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra, Colla Voce choral ensemble, and soprano soloist in Carmina Burana with the Jacksonville State University combined choirs and orchestra. As a frequent collaborator with guitarist Alan Goldspiel and a founding member of the LeBaron Trio with clarinetist Lori Ardovino and pianist Laurie Middaugh, Williams enjoys performing solo and chamber music concerts throughout the United States, including concerts in Los Angeles; Flagstaff; Santa Fe; Boston; and Seaside, Florida. She is also a founding member of The Meàllo Trio, along with Lori Ardovino and Alan Goldspiel. Works by contemporary American composers is a particular focus of her solo recital repertoire, along with standard art song and operatic repertoire in Italian, German, French, English and Spanish.

Research interests include vocal pedagogy and voice science, particularly in two areas: exploring effective concurrent applications of the historical treatises and vocal methods with technological tools of the current age of voice science in developing both technical and artistic excellence, and, secondly, cultivating awareness and dialogue among voice teachers, speech language pathologists, vocal students, and physicians to promote vocal hygiene and awareness of appropriate medical protocols for vocally injured singers. Additional performance related research is primarily in the areas of contemporary American music, and particularly of Southern and women composers, and in the exploration of body awareness and movement, including The Alexander Technique, Pilates, yoga, aerobic exercise, and weight training, as a means of achieving optimum whole-body integration and support for singing.

Williams is Professor of Music at the University of Montevallo, where she teaches Applied Voice, Vocal Pedagogy, and English and French Diction courses. Having served as governor of the Alabama Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing from 2005 – 2008, she is a former Governor of the N.A.T.S Southeastern Region and former member of the N.A.T.S. National Executive Board. She and husband, Mark, reside in Birmingham, Alabama with their children, Anna and John Mark.

ALAN GOLDSPIEL has performed world premieres at New York’s Carnegie and CAMI Halls and has been featured on NPR radio stations from coast to coast. He continues to be an active international performer whose compositions are regularly commissioned.

He is the recipient of the Alabama State Council on the Arts 2016-2017 Artist Fellowship Award for artistic excellence as well as professional commitment and maturity – awarded to outstanding individual artists from Alabama who create important works of art and make valuable contributions to the entire state.

His music has been performed at national and international events including the conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance, National Association of Composers, and International Clarinet Association. Dr. Goldspiel received the 2014 Alabama Music Teachers Association Composition Commission and he was a 2013 recipient of the Escape to Create Residency in Seaside, Florida.

He is the only guitarist to be honored with the Marshall Dodge Award of the Performing Artists Associates of New England and has been a soloist with the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, Monroe Symphony Orchestra, Vermont Philharmonic, Sinfonie-by-the-Sea, and served as an Artist-in-Residence for North Carolina’s prestigious Visiting Artists Program, presenting over eighty concerts throughout that state.

As the Music Director of the Magic Shtetl Klezmer Band, he has performed and arranged many pieces from the classic Klezmer repertoire. His composition project, a Klezmer Shabbat Service, keeps that tradition current.

He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching, research, and service including the Louisiana State Arts Council Artist Fellowship Award for artistic excellence and the University Senate Chair Award from Louisiana Tech University.

He has taught at the International Guitar Festival held at the The Hartt School, where he remains the only guitarist to be designated University Scholar for his research on the music of Villa-lobos. He is Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Montevallo. On Thursday, January 25, from noon to 1:00 pm in the Grand Gallery, the series will present a free concert by soprano Rosephanye Dunn Powell and mezzo-soprano Anne Duraski with pianist Joshua Pifer. The group will present solo and chamber music by composers including Joseph Canteloube, Johannes Brahms, Alexander Scriabin, Jacques Offenbach, and new arrangements by Dr. Powell. Dr. ROSEPHANYE DUNN POWELL’s soprano singing has brought her, successfully, through recital, concert, and oratorio performances throughout the south, northeast and western regions of the United States. Her oratorio performances include Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah and Israel in Egypt, Mozart’s Requiem, and Saint-Saens’ Christmas Oratorio. During her career, Dr. Powell has distinguished herself as a researcher, interpreter and performer of the African-American spiritual. She has presented numerous recitals and lecture-recitals at concert halls, universities, professional conferences, and churches around the country, as well as in Europe and the Caribbean. In addition to her career as a performer and vocal pedagogue, Dr. Powell is an internationally-recognized composer of choral music, considered to be one of America’s premier women composers.

Dr. Powell serves as Professor of Voice and Coordinator of Voice Studies at Auburn University. She holds degrees from The Florida State University (D.M. in vocal performance, University Fellow), Westminster Choir College (M.M. in vocal performance and pedagogy, with distinction), and Alabama State University (B.M.E., summa cum laude). Before coming to Auburn University, Dr. Powell served as voice professor and Chair of the Department of Music at Philander Smith College (Arkansas) and as Assistant Professor of Voice at Georgia Southern University.  Dr. Powell is married to Dr. William C. Powell, Director of Choral Activities at Auburn University. The couple has two daughters, Camille Elise and Kaitlyn Elizabeth.

ANNE SNOW DURASKI, mezzo-soprano, has enjoyed a varied career in music as educator, professional soloist and music producer. Ms. Duraski received double majors in Voice and Music Education from Auburn University and the Master’s degree is Voice from the University of Alabama. She pursued post-graduate studies in voice and opera at Washington University of St. Louis, and The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. She also pursued extensive operatic training in apprenticeships with Chautauqua, Aspen, and Sarasota Operas and Opernhaus Zurich in Switzerland.

Ms. Duraski made her American operatic debut with the New Orleans Opera in the role of Inez in Il Trovatore and her European debut in the same season with the role of Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Rome Festival Opera. Since then she has gone on to sing numerous mezzo-soprano roles, serving as principal lyric mezzo-soprano for the Schleswig-Hosteinisches Landestheater in Flenburg, Germany, and appearing in opera houses in Switzerland and the United States. Her most recent appearance was as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with the Mobile Opera. Ms. Duraski often sings solo oratorio and symphonic repertoire, as well. Her favorite repertoire in this genre is Brahms’s Alto Rhapsody Verdi’s Requiem and Dvorak’s Requiem.

Ms. Duraski is director of Auburn University’s Opera Workshop and teaches Voice and Opera Literature as part of the Vocal Literature curriculum. She has a passion for opera education and performance having created and directed the LaGrange Lyric Theatre which presented educational outreach programs.

Joshua Pifer

Dr. JOSHUA PIFER is Senior Lecturer in Piano at Auburn University and piano faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Festival. Previously, Dr. Pifer served as Visiting Assistant Professor at Florida State University Adjunct Faculty at Wittenberg University, and Artist Faculty at Orfeo Music Festival. Dr. Pifer’s major teachers were Antoinette Perry, Robert Thomas, and Robert Howat.

Dr. Pifer has appeared in concert as a soloist and chamber musician on three continents and in 22 U.S. states.  Praised for his “sensitivity,” “color,” and “depth” in performance, his solo CD is titled Alexander Tcherepnin My Favorite Piano Works. Dr. Pifer regularly presents at professional conferences and currently is the Vice President/President Elect for the Alabama Music Teachers Association. A pedagogue and performer, Dr. Pifer’s masterclasses are “filled with innovative substance and the joy of discovery.” Dr. Pifer adjudicates at festivals and competitions and his former students include competition finalists and successful professional musicians.

On Thursday, February 1, from noon to 1:00 pm in the Auditorium, the series will present a free concert by Chicago-based improvised-music group Marker featuring clarinetist/saxophonist/composer Ken Vandermark. The group will perform a live soundtrack to Chris Marker’s short film, La Jetée and a set of original compositions. MARKER is Ken Vandermark’s newest ensemble as a leader. In addition to Ken on tenor & baritone saxophones, b-flat & bass clarinets, it includes Andrew Clinkman and Steve Marquette on guitars, Macie Stewart on violin and keyboard, and Phil Sudderberg on drums. Continuing Ken’s interest in creating new compositional forms for improvised music, he has devised a performance system that not only employs variable order through collage, but has added superimposition to the structuring of material to create another layer of possibility for the organization of the sets. The music of Marker expands the conventional orchestration for an improvising quintet, and is deeply inspired by Bernie Worrell’s keyboard work with Parliament Funkadelic and Talking Heads, contemporary classical music, the guitar work of post-punk groups like Wire and The Ex, and groove methodologies from Brazil, Afro-Beat, and funk.

The band began working together in September of 2016, workshopping a series of Ken’s compositional experiments until he was able to create a different method of spontaneous organization than those he uses with his group Made To Break and in the quartet with Steve Heather, Jasper Stadhouders, and Nate Wooley, called Shelter. At the beginning of December, after several practice sessions had taken place during the autumn, Ken discovered a unique way to separate the material into three specific types (melodic, tableau, or game) that could be played individually or in any combination, with the ability to vary these sequences from performance to performance. This approach took his interest in cinematic construction methods and applied it to the development of music for improvisers more deeply than ever before.

The results of this initial breakthrough were presented at the first Marker performance, which took place on January 21, 2017 at Elastic Arts in Chicago, during Tim Daisy’s “Hit The Ground Running” fundraiser for Planned Parenthood. The fundamental aesthetics for the ensemble were in place, but another primary challenge had not been resolved – that of investigating the idea of memory with music. Marker resumed an intense rehearsal schedule throughout the summer of 2017, further developing the construction principles Ken had developed specifically for the ensemble. At the end of July he had two performances at the Stone at the New School in New York and visited the Rauschenberg retrospective at MoMA, Robert Rauschenberg: Among Friends, spending most of his time with the silkscreen paintings. This experience enabled him to visualize an additional way to organize the compositions, one that would create opportunities to put thematic material forward and backward in the chronological time of Marker’s performances.

During August of 2017 the band had a residency in Milwaukee at the Sugar Maple, playing three Sundays in a row. At the final concert the ensemble also performed a live soundtrack composed to accompany Chris Marker’s film, La Jetée. This series of concerts solidified the foundation for the group’s music, preparing it for a show in Chicago at the Hungry Brain for the Instigation Festival on September 8 and then for a recording session for its first album, to be held at Experimental Sound Studio at the end of that month. In early 2018 Marker will take its music on the road for the first time, performing at the New Orleans version of the Instigation Festival in late January, and then continuing with a series of concerts for audiences in the South East of the United States.  The ensemble released its initial album, Wired For Sound, on Audiographic Records to coincide with this trip.

Ken Vandermark

Born in Warwick, Rhode Island on September 22nd, 1964, KEN VANDERMARK began studying the tenor saxophone at the age of 16. Since graduating with a degree in Film and Communications from McGill University during the spring of 1986, his primary creative emphasis has been the exploration of contemporary music that deals directly with advanced methods of improvisation.

In 1989, he moved to Chicago from Boston, and has worked continuously from the early 1990’s onward, both as a performer and organizer in North America and Europe, recording in a large array of contexts, with internationally renowned musicians such as Fred Anderson, Ab Baars, Tim Barnes, Peter Brötzmann, Tim Daisy, Hamid Drake, Terrie Hessels, Mats Gustafsson, Elisabeth Harnik, Steve Heather, Didi Kern, Kent Kessler, Christof Kurzmann, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Paul Lytton, Lou Mallozzi, Lasse Marhaug, Joe McPhee, Andy Moor, Jason Moran, Joe Morris, Paal Nilssen-Love, Eddie Prevost, Eric Revis, Jasper Stadhouders, Chad Taylor, John Tilbury, Nasheet Waits, Mars Williams, Nate Wooley, and C. Spencer Yeh.

In 1999 he was awarded the MacArthur prize for music.

His current activity includes work with Made To Break, Marker, Lean Left, Shelter, DEK, The DKV Trio, The Eric Revis Quartet and duos with Paal Nilssen-Love, Terrie Hessels, and Nate Wooley, as well as work as a solo performer.

Since June of 2015, Ken has been co-curator of Option, a music series held on a weekly basis between March and October at the Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago. In 2014 he began an independent label, called Audiographic Records, created to document special aspects of his work through albums and books.

More than half of each year is spent touring in Europe, North America, Russia, South America, and Japan, and his concerts and numerous recordings have been critically acclaimed both at home and abroad.

In addition to the tenor sax, he also plays the bass and b-flat clarinets, and baritone saxophone.

On Thursday, February 8, from noon to 1:00 pm in the Grand Gallery, the series will present a free concert by members of the Auburn University flute studio. Flutists featured will be Francesca Andretta, Morgan Mabry, Katie Olszowy, and Gillian Ash with pianist Nicole Agostino. The program will include music by Georges Enesco, Gabriel Faure, Cecil Chaminade, and Phillipe Gaubert. A gift from George Kent and from anonymous friends of the series have helped to make this performance possible.

FRANCESCA ANDRETTA is an Auburn University Music Education Major from Woodstock, Georgia. Her academic achievements include her invitation into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and her Presidential Scholarship. Currently the flute instructor at Spicer’s Music, her proudest achievement is getting the opportunity to record accompaniment for a music arranger. Francesca is an Auburn University Music Ambassador and a member of the Auburn University Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Corey Spurlin, the Auburn University Flute Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Alina Windell, and the Auburn University Chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. William Powell. Before coming to Auburn, she studied flute under Pam Dedeaux.

GILLIAN ASH is a freshman dual major in Flute Performance and Animal Science Pre-Vet at Auburn University. Her high school achievements include earning superior ratings in solo and ensemble competitions and being awarded positions in honor bands including the Auburn University Symphonic Honor Band, the Auburn University Marching Honor Band, and the Samford University Symphonic Band. At Briarwood Christian High School, Gillian was a member of the concert band, marching band, pep band, and jazz band, where she played flute, piccolo, and trumpet. She performed in the pit orchestra for her school’s productions of “Into the Woods” and “Bye Bye Birdie.” Gillian is a member of the Auburn University Marching Band, Symphonic Winds, and Flute Choir. She aspires to own her own vet clinic, while having the opportunity to continue in her flute studies and perform in symphony orchestras around the country. Gillian has been playing flute for nine years, and her teachers include Janis Nichol and Dr. Alina Windell.

MORGAN MABRY in her third year at Auburn University working on a dual degree in Music Performance and Education. She started playing flute in 2008, and in high school, participated at the district level in the Mobile County Honor Band all four years, one year placing top chair in the district. She made the Alabama All-State Honor band for three consecutive years. In high school she began playing trombone, and was first chair on both flute and trombone in her high school’s top band. While at Auburn, she has participated in the Symphonic Winds, Concert Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Trombone Choir, Woodwind Quintet, and Chamber Choir. She has performed for honor band festivals, weddings, and nursing homes and in venues such as the Auburn University Hotel. In 2016, she participated in the Symphonic Winds’ Italy tour. Morgan spends free time during the summers playing in a band with friends and illustrating children’s books.

KATIE OLSZOWY, a Huntsville native, is currently a sophomore at Auburn University studying Music Performance and Human Development. She has a passion for flute and has played in ensembles such as woodwind quintets, flute ensembles, the Auburn University Symphonic Winds, and the Auburn University Marching Band. Outside of ensembles she also supports music through groups such as the National Band Association and Kappa Kappa Psi, a fraternity dedicated to promoting the existence and welfare of college bands.

NICOLE AGOSTINO holds two degrees, both in piano performance, from the renowned Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She earned her Bachelor of Music with high distinction in 2005 and her Master of Music with an emphasis in music theory in 2007, both under the tutelage of Dr. Karen Shaw. In 2015, Nicole completed her Doctorate of Music in piano performance from Florida State University, where she studied with Dr. Read Gainsford. During her studies at Florida State, Nicole also completed certificates in Music Theory Pedagogy and in College Teaching.

An active soloist and chamber musician, Nicole has performed recitals across the northeastern, midwestern, and southern United States. She has toured as a guest artist, giving recitals and lectures across the Southeast on Bach’s Goldberg Variations and has recorded the work. Presently residing in Auburn, Alabama, Nicole is an adjunct instructor and collaborative pianist at Auburn University and has served as a faculty member at Southern Union State Community College. In addition to performing, Nicole is a teacher and adjudicator. She has maintained a private piano studio for over 15 years and serves regularly as a judge for music competitions throughout the Southeast. As a graduate assistant at both FSU and IU, she taught applied lessons, class piano, and gave music theory lectures, and held a piano faculty position at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan.

In addition to her musical life, Nicole enjoys teaching and practicing yoga, and is the owner of Yogafly Studio in Auburn. She has been practicing yoga since 2012, and holds her advanced teacher training certification with California-based yoga teacher Peach Friedman. In addition to her regular studio teaching, Nicole also teaches yoga workshops for musicians, focusing on posture and breath for injury prevention, as well as visualization for performance preparation. Nicole believes that the practice and discipline of yoga are complementary to that of music, and enjoys these parallels in teaching both yoga and piano.

On Thursday, February 15, from noon to 1:00 pm, the series will present a free concert in the Auditorium by pianist Vadim Serebryany. The program will include the Piano Sonata in A-flat, Op.110 by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B-minor. A gift from Drs. Vadim Serebryany

Pianist VADIM SEREBRYANY has been highly sought after as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician. He has performed in Europe, South America, Australia and throughout the US, Canada and Japan. In recent seasons, he has been a guest soloist with the National Arts Center Orchestra, The Kingston Symphony, the Osaka Century Orchestra, and Montgomery Symphony Orchestra.

In 2005, Mr. Serebryany founded Trio+ with violinst Yosuke Kawasaki and cellist Wolfram Koessel. The ensemble is known for its creative programs which explore a large portion of the chamber repertory, including duos, trios and larger ensembles in which they frequently collaborate with guest artists. The trio has performed to critical acclaim throughout North America and Japan.

Mr. Serebryany is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, the Juilliard School and Yale University. His teachers have included Marina Geringas, Oxana Yablonskaya, Jacob Lateiner, and Boris Berman.

From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Serebryany served as Artist in Residence at La Sierra University in Riverside, California, and has also served as a visiting professor at Lawrence University. From 2008 to 2016, he was a professor of music at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, and in 2015 was named Huntingdon’s first ever Belcher-Cheek Artist in Residence.

Mr. Serebryany joined the piano faculty at the Ithaca College School of Music in 2016.

Oboists Aly Bonville, Alyssa Landers, Erica Lovato, Sarah Tanner, and Aaron Thompson will join bassoonists Emma Greer, Carlisle Vidourek, and Jacob Webb with pianists Nicole Agostino and Bea La. The program will include music by Robert Schumann, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Benjamin Britten, Paul Hindemith, Georg Philip Telemann, Francis Poulenc, Ludwig van Beethoven, Georges Bizet, and Stacey Berk.

Kristin Leitterman

Dr. KRISTIN LEITTERMAN seeks to defy modern convention as a solo artist of oboe and voice, bringing exciting and unusual programs to audiences. She makes it her responsibility to commission works for oboe/voice, having done so for works by Jason Coleman, MuXuan Lin, and Lyle Davidson. She has participated in summer festivals and competitions including Bowdoin International Music Festival, New Music on the Point, Eastern Music Festival, Hot Springs Music Festival, and the Banff Center for the Arts. She was a semi-finalist in the Concert Artist Guild’s annual competition in New York City.

In addition to performing, Dr. Leitterman is dedicated to bringing music to the younger generations. She is currently the Assistant Professor of Double Reeds at Auburn University. In addition to teaching oboe and bassoon, her duties include Music Skills, Woodwind Skills, and directing the Auburn University Double Reed Ensemble.

Dr. Leitterman is the Director of the Lucarelli Oboe Master Class, a weeklong immersive oboe master class founded by Bert Lucarelli. She has presented master classes at Manhattan School of Music, the Hartt School, and Southeast Missouri State University. Additionally, she has presented lecture recitals at The Juilliard School, the CUNY Graduate Center, and the Brazilian Double Reed Society’s annual conference in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil.

She holds degrees from the City University of New York’s Graduate Center, the Hartt School, the New England Conservatory, and the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. Her teachers include Humbert Lucarelli, Mark McEwen, Barbara Bishop, and Amy Burton.

The Auburn University Double-Reed Studio, Spring 2018

The AUBURN UNIVERSITY DOUBLE REED ENSEMBLE was formed in 2017 with the arrival of Dr. Kristin Leitterman at Auburn University as the Double Reed Professor. The group consists of students majoring in music, as well as university students outside the Department of Music. Members are Aly Bonville, Emma Greer, Alyssa Landers, Erica Lovato, Sarah Tanner, Aaron Thompson, Jacob Webb, and Carlisle Vidourek.

ALY BONVILLE is a junior oboist and English hornist majoring in Music Education at Auburn University. She is a member of the Auburn University Symphonic Winds and a clarinetist in the Auburn University Marching Band. Aly is also a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, national honorary fraternity for college band members, and is involved with service projects in the music department. In her free time, Aly enjoys spending time with friends and family, watching Doctor Who, and of course, practicing.

EMMA GREER is a freshman at Auburn University majoring in music education. She began learning the violin at age seven and has continued playing it for eleven years. Beginning in middle school Emma began to learn the bassoon which she played in band throughout her high school career. Competing in multiple honor bands, Emma participated in Alabama District Honor band as well as Alabama All-State middle-school and high school bands. Continuing her musical career, she is a participant of the Auburn University Wind Symphony and Double-Reed Ensemble.

ALYSSA LANDERS is a sophomore at Auburn University majoring in oboe performance. She has participated in performing groups at Auburn including the Double Reed Ensemble and the Concert Band. Alyssa hopes to eventually go to graduate school for oboe performance or composition. In addition to music, she participates in the physics club and volunteers with animals through the university.

ERICA LOVATO is a freshman Oboe Performance major at Auburn University. Erica, from Spanish Fort, Alabama, has been playing oboe for seven years. She was Principal Oboe in the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra for three years, made the Alabama All State top band for three years, received superior ratings at the Alabama All Sate Solo Festival, won the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto competition, received a scholarship from Mobile’s chapter of the Schumann Club, received the prestigious John Phillips Sousa Award, and has participated in master classes with the following artists: Dr. Rebecca Mindock, Dr. Eric Ohlsson, Dr. James Brody, and Dr. Susan Tomkiewicz. Her middle school band director and professional oboist, Leslie Owens, first inspired her love of the oboe.

SARAH TANNER is senior at Auburn University triple majoring in Music Education, Oboe Performance, and Psychology. In high school, Ms. Tanner was musically and academically active in her school and community. She was a member of National Honor Society and was Vice President of her school’s chapter of Tri-M Music Honor Society. Ms. Tanner was also the Principle Oboe of the Fulton County Youth Orchestra. In college, she was selected to be a member of the 2017 Alabama Intercollegiate Band and she serves as the Tenor Sax Section Leader in the Auburn University Marching Band. When she’s not playing her oboe or saxophone, Ms. Tanner enjoys singing and has participated in Auburn’s choirs. Additionally, she is the Co-Founder, Co-President, and Director of Tonal Recall A Cappella.

AARON THOMPSON is a senior in Music Education and Oboe Performance at Auburn University. In addition to playing oboe in the Auburn University Symphonic Winds, Orchestra, and Double Reed Ensemble, he is also a member of the Auburn University Chamber Choir and one of the Drum Majors of the Auburn University Marching Band. He is an active member of several organizations including Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity; National Band Association; International Double Reed Society; and the Auburn Department of Music Ambassadors. In his free time, he enjoys cheering on Auburn Athletics, reading, and watching local theater productions.

JACOB WEBB lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for twelve years before starting his degree as a bassoon performance major at Auburn University. Jacob attended West Harrison High School where his musical career began. As a freshman, he attended the Gulf Coast Band Director’s Association clinic, an event that he would make for the next four years. During his sophomore and senior years he attended the Mississippi Bandmasters Association clinic in Natchez, Mississippi. In the summer of 2017, Jacob went with the Mississippi Lions All-State band to Chicago to perform for the centennial anniversary of the Lions International Convention. As of August 2017, Jacob has been a student at the Auburn University, studying bassoon performance under Dr. Kristin Leitterman.

BYUL NIM “BEA” LA is completing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance (Currently ABD) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she has served as a teaching and accompanying assistant. She earned her Masters degree in solo piano performance at New York University and was an adjunct faculty member at NYU Steinhardt. At NYU, she was trained as a competitive performer, received lessons from a Horowitz pupil, Prof. Eduardus Halim, and won two annual piano concerto competitions in a row. Ms. La is an accompanying instructor at Auburn University.

Ms. La’s solo performances have received praise from the UI piano faculty and from Menahem Pressler and Richard Goode, both of whom chose her to play in their master classes. As a collaborator, she feels that she has successfully helped and attracted students and has been sought out by conductors and teachers. She has worked with both undergraduate and graduate students as a coach/pianist in the UI opera division, and as an accompanying assistant in choral classes and voice and instrumental studios.

In addition to her university teaching experience, Ms. La has also been an active private piano instructor, preparing students for the most prestigious university entrance examinations in South Korea and getting excellent results, recognizing key issues that could hinder students’ talent and helping them conquer these challenges, based on her own experience as a sincere, passionate performer.

NICOLE AGOSTINO holds two degrees, both in piano performance, from the renowned Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She earned her Bachelor of Music with high distinction in 2005 and her Master of Music with an emphasis in music theory in 2007, both under the tutelage of Dr. Karen Shaw. In 2015, Nicole completed her Doctorate of Music in piano performance from Florida State University, where she studied with Dr. Read Gainsford. During her studies at Florida State, Nicole also completed certificates in Music Theory Pedagogy and in College Teaching.

An active soloist and chamber musician, Nicole has performed recitals across the northeastern, midwestern, and southern United States. She has toured as a guest artist, giving recitals and lectures across the Southeast on Bach’s Goldberg Variations and has recorded the work. Presently residing in Auburn, Alabama, Nicole is an adjunct instructor and collaborative pianist at Auburn University and has served as a faculty member at Southern Union State Community College. In addition to performing, Nicole is a teacher and adjudicator. She has maintained a private piano studio for over 15 years and serves regularly as a judge for music competitions throughout the Southeast. Luther Enloe

Known for possessing a distinctively resonant sound quality, lyrical phrasing, and technical finesse, classical guitarist LUTHER ENLOE has received acclaim from concert presenters and audience members alike for the expressive command of his live performances. Moreover, John Sutherland, his teacher at the University of Georgia, where he received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree, said, “Luther’s performances are wonderful. His sound is one of the best I have ever heard.” In addition to earning Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in music from the University of Georgia with Sutherland, Luther studied sixteen pieces in nine masterclass settings with American virtuoso Christopher Parkening.

Hailing from Eclectic, Alabama, soprano PATTY HOLLEY has received awards and recognitions for her performances, including first place at the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra Vann Vocal Institute (2017), and being selected as a winner for Auburn Community Orchestra’s biennial Concerto Competition (2018). She participates in National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competitions in both its Alabama Chapter (ALANATS) and Southeast Region, for which her most recent awards include first place Fourth Year Classical Women and first place Fourth Year Musical Theater Women (both 2018 ALANATS). In 2017, she was named a NATS National Semifinalist, for which she traveled to Denver, Colorado to compete, and spent Summer 2017 as an intern for the Glimmerglass Opera Festival in Cooperstown, New York.

Miss Holley is a senior at Auburn University pursuing a degree in Vocal Performance, studying under Dr. Matthew Hoch, and a degree in Music Education. She performs in the school’s Opera Workshop, for which her most notable roles include Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro” and Rosalinde in Strauss’s “Die Fledermaus” (both 2017). Miss Holley served as President of the school’s Chamber Choir from 2015-2018 and has sung in Auburn choral ensembles including the Gospel Choir and the Women’s Chorus. She currently serves as a Music Ambassador for Auburn’s music department to assist in recruiting new students to the university. After graduating in Fall 2018, Miss Holley plans to attend graduate school for a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance.

Dawn Driggers

Pianist Dawn Driggers

DAWN DRIGGERS serves as a collaborative pianist for the Auburn University Department of Music, where she accompanies fourteen of the voice majors, the Opera Workshop program directed by Anne Duraski, and the Women’s Chorus conducted by Dr. Rosephanye Dunn-Powell. Prior to coming to Auburn University, she served at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC as a staff accompanist, then at Newberry College in Newberry, SC as a staff accompanist and adjunct instructor of secondary voice. At Newberry, she accompanied the Newberry College Madrigals, Newberry College Singers, and numerous voice majors. She served as accompanist for the Laurens County Chorale and the Greenwood Festival Chorale, accompanying two international tours with these groups.

Mrs. Driggers has taught private voice and piano students at her home studio since 1987. She has 29 years of experience directing children’s choirs in Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, and South Carolina. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a voice principal from Samford University, also completing additional requirements for the Samford Performing Arts Program. While a student, she performed with the Samford Opera Workshop, Samford Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and was a soloist with the University Chorale.

Mrs. Driggers is married to Morris Driggers, Associate Pastor for Music at Auburn First Baptist Church, and they have two adult sons, Taylor and Benjamin. Taylor is pursuing a Ph.D. in English Literature at the University of Glasgow (UK), and Benjamin, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, is employed at the Clinical Pharmacology Lab at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.

pianist Lawrence Quinnett

LAWRENCE QUINNETT is an active concert pianist who has played solo and chamber music in the US and abroad. He has appeared as concerto soloist with the National Repertory Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Carl Topilow, the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra with Maestro Alex Jimenez, the Samuel Barber Festival Orchestra, and the Methodist University Orchestra. He has given concerts and masterclasses in St. Kitts; London and elsewhere in the UK; and colleges and universities in Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Having grown up in North Carolina, Quinnett returned to judge competitions and to give masterclasses as part of the 2011 and 2012 Fayetteville Piano Festival and 2012 Chopin Festival. He has been a featured performer at the Music at Mains Series at the Jacksonville Public Library, the 2015 Montserrat Music Festival, and the Central Florida Music Teachers’ Association.

Quinnett’s competition successes include first prize in the 2013 Doctoral Concerto Competition at Florida State University, the 2011 FSU Chapman Competition, the 2008 South Carolina Music Teachers’ Association Young Artist Piano Competition, and the 2006 Southeastern College Piano Competition. While a student at Methodist University, he received the Willis C. Gates Music Award for Excellence two years in a row.

Considering himself an inquisitive musician, Quinnett’s interests include chamber music, harpsichord, new music, and music theory. In October 2013 he was one of the three featured pianists in Charleston’s Colour of Music Festival which celebrates composers of African descent. Quinnett was a performer in the 2012 New Music Festival and John Cage Festival at FSU and both performer and lecturer at the 2013 Ligeti Symposium and Festival. The topic of his doctoral treatise is harmony in the first book of Ligeti Etudes. Quinnett teaches as professor at Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC. He previously served at Wallace Community College in Dothan, Alabama, and Fayetteville Technical Community College in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Quinnett’s formative teachers have included Carolyn Cloud-Absher, Jane Gardiner, Dr. Jon Maisonpierre, and Dr. Douglas Weeks. He has been privileged to be selected for masterclasses and coaching sessions with Jeremy Denk, Karen Shaw, Anton Kuerti, Simone Dinnerstein, Elizabeth Pridinoff, Miles Hoffman, the Cavani String Quartet, Frederick Moyer, and Shai Wosner, among others. He holds the Doctor of Music degree from Florida State University, where he studied with Dr. Read Gainsford.

On Thursday, March 29, from noon to 1:00 pm in the auditorium, the series will present a free concert by Wolf and Clover, an acoustic quintet heavily influenced by Celtic and Irish music traditions.  The band is composed of Justin Belew (accordion), Jeremy Bass (guitar, though not appearing on this date), Jessica Bennett (fiddle), Matthew McCabe (banjo and bouzouki), and Stephanie Payne (winds). The program will include original music and interpretations of traditional tunes and songs. Gifts from William J. WOLF & CLOVER (wolfandclover.com) started as a side project among a group of friends in Columbus, Georgia. We enjoyed playing together and wanted to share our music with our friends, so we started a Facebook page. We got some great responses to our videos and surprisingly, we started getting asked to play in public. Now we play at church services, festivals, fundraisers, dances, museums, and pubs. It’s been a blast so far, and it’s always interesting to see where we’ll go next! We’re still at the beginning of our traditional music adventure, and loving every minute of it. Members are Jeremy Bass on guitar and mandolin (not appearing for this performance); Justin Belew on guitar, accordion, and vocals; Jessica Bennett on fiddle and vocals; Matthew McCabe on bouzoukis and tenor banjo; and Stephanie Payne on whistles and flutes.

A graduate of Point University, JUSTIN BELEW holds a B.S. degree in Music Philosophy with a minor in piano performance. Justin has worked over twenty-five years as a professional musician for schools and churches. He has a full music production studio that he operates where he specializes in recording professional voice overs and jingles, “demos”, and boutique album projects of various budget sizes. Justin has recorded and performed with commercial and independent musicians alike. He is known for his ability to teach, play, and arrange for many different types of instruments. JESSICA BENNETT, a native of Columbus, Georgia, began violin lessons at the age of six. She graduated from Columbus State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, concentrating on music education, viola, and instrument repair. Her passion for music has taken her all over the U.S. with competitions, recording projects, and performances as a soloist and ensemble member. Recently Jessica has recorded in Nashville and Franklin, Tennessee for country music artists, performed with the Lagrange Symphony Orchestra, and worked with the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus as a string instructor and mentor for the violin ensemble. She has also worked with the Columbus Symphony and other organizations as a violin instructor for the Empowered Youth of Columbus program. Jessica’s private studio, JLB Music Studio, offers music lessons and services in Columbus and the surrounding areas. Jessica conducts private lessons and group lessons for violin, viola, cello, guitar, bass guitar, piano, mandolin, and voice. She teaches guitar and violin privately at Brookstone School.

MATTHEW MCCABE is currently Assistant Professor of Audio Technology at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University of Florida, an M.M. in Music Composition from Bowling Green State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Richmond. He has an extensive list of credits as a recording engineer of primarily concert hall music, and teaches audio engineering and production as well as composition and popular music courses at CSU. He is a student of the Irish Language and has participated in immersion programs and coursework for the last several years. His website is euph0r1a.net.

STEPHANIE PAYNE is currently the Executive Director of the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus and the wind player for Wolf & Clover. She grew up in Ringgold, Georgia, studying flute with Norma Anderson, piccoloist of the Chattanooga Symphony Opera and Orchestra, since third grade. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from the Schwob School of Music and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from the D. Abbott Turner College of Business at Columbus State University. Stephanie then completed her M.A. in Arts Administration at Florida State University where she held internships with performing arts organizations and was an active member of the FSU Irish Music Ensemble. She continues to perform as a freelance flutist in the Columbus region, and has attended and performed at the Oberlin Summer Institute, Wildacres Flute Retreat, Domaine Forget, and 2012 National Flute Association Convention.

Also a member of this group, JEREMY BASS will not be appearing on this date.

On Thursday, April 5, from noon to 1:00 pm in the auditorium, the series will present a free concert by soprano Noemí de Silva with pianist Beibei Lin. The duo will be joined by guest recordist Doug Leonard. The program will feature music by Paolo Tosti, Giuseppi Verdi, Jules Massenet, Georges Bizet, Hugo Wolf, and Johann Sebastian Bach. Gifts from Helga and James Wilmoth, the Hamilton Gables Homeowners Association (in Memory of Aida and Hector Trau), and Anonymous Friends of the Series have helped make this performance possible.

Soprano NOEMÍ DE SILVA (née Pérez Silva) has been praised by critics for her ability to “enact a simple, beautiful [portrayal] utilizing a sweet vocal tesatura befitting the character.” (“La Gaceta”). Ms. de Silva has enjoyed what she considers a rich working relationship with the Spanish Lyric Theater in Tampa, Florida. Among her roles, she has portrayed the title character in Cinderella; “Julietta” in El Conde de Luxemburgo; “Asia” in Agua, Azucarillos y Aguardiente; and “Rosaura” in Los Gavilanes. She has also appeared in productions with Opera Tampa, Florida State Opera, and St. Petersburg Opera.

Initially trained as a violinist, Ms. de Silva began her vocal studies at the University of Florida where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance. After graduating, she continued her training with Theresa D’Aiuto Andrasy-Sokol, Linda Mulé Switzer and David Okerlund. She graduated with her Master’s Degree from Florida State University in May 2012. Since graduate school, Noemí has worked in music administration, first at the University of Denver, then with the Montgomery Music Project, an El Sistema inspired program that is now part of the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra.

Chinese American pianist BEIBEI LIN maintains an active schedule as an educator and performer. Dr. Lin debuted as a soloist with the MasterWorks Festival Orchestra at age seventeen, performing Prokofiev’s First Piano Concerto. In the summer of 2015, she traveled throughout China, assisting and translating lecture recitals and masterclasses for Dr. Heidi L. Williams at major conservatories and universities. Significant past performances include collaborative appearances at the 2016 International Double Reed Society Conference, and a solo appearance at the 2017 Women Composers Festival of Hartford.

Dr. Lin performed the music of James Ogburn with Michelle DeBruyn (soprano), Wendy Warner (cello), and Joel Castro (percussion) at Wichita State University and University of Kansas in January of 2018. In April of 2018, she will present a recital with clarinetist Patricia Crispino at Central Washington University. In the summer of 2018, she will serve as a collaborative pianist for the MasterWorks Festival in Spartanburg, South Carolina at Converse College. She has presented guest-artist recitals and masterclasses throughout the United States.

Dedicated to community engagement and service, Dr. Lin currently serves as the Secretary of the Columbus Music Teachers Association (CMTA); she is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the CMTA website. Dr. Lin was invited to adjudicate the 2016 Florida Junior and Senior Music Teachers National Association Piano Competitions as well as the 2017 Alabama Music Teachers Association State Piano Auditions.

As an active researcher, Dr. Lin’s work on the pedagogical trends in 21st-century China has recently been accepted for presentation at the 2017 National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. Her article on this topic was published in the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy Forum. She has appeared multiple times as a performer, presenter, and panelist at The Sport Professionals’ Experience and Research Conference, speaking on interdisciplinary topics relating to music and sports performance.

Prior to her appointment at Columbus State University, Dr. Lin taught in the piano pedagogy program at Florida State University under the supervision of Dr. Victoria McArthur, a leading American pedagogue and Keyboard Editor of Alfred Music Publishing. Dr. Lin completed her Doctor of Music in Piano Performance at The Florida State University in December 2016. She holds a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy and Performance from The Florida State University and a Bachelor of Music, Summa Cum Laude, in Piano Performance from Arizona State University. Her piano mentors include Heidi Louise Williams and Walter Cosand.

On Thursday, April 12, from noon to 1:00, the series will present a free concert in the Grand Gallery by soprano Janet Hopkins with pianist Armen Shaomian. The program will feature composer Olga Harris’s settings of texts by Erich Fried and Shel Silverstein and cabaret songs by William Bolcom and Arnold Weinstein. This program has been made possible in part by a visiting faculty travel grant from the Southeastern Conference and by a gift from Friends of the Series.

JANET E. HOPKINS, mezzo-soprano, was a principal soloist at the Metropolitan Opera for fifteen seasons. She was the mezzo soloist for the Verdi requiem at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; Tulsa; and Minneapolis (2010-11); then at the Berkshires and South Carolina (2012); and had national and international performances in 2013-14 including Spain, Boston, Charleston, New York, and St. Louis. Her upcoming performances include Tulsa, California, New York, and Italy.

Ms. Hopkins’ recordings include “The Ghosts of Versailles and Elektra” DVDs along with a large collection of Texaco Broadcast “Live from the Met” recordings. She has released solo recordings including “Ulysses Kay: Works for Chamber Orchestra and Soprano” and Ayala Asherov Kalus’ “Cycles of the Moon” on Naxos. In 2007, Ms. Hopkins produced a unique music and wine project, personally blending her own cuvée red wine in conjunction with the award winning Tulip Hill Winery. This was accompanied by a collection of classical Neapolitan Italian songs, recorded at the historical Capitol Records in Hollywood. The wine and CD were called “Aria”. The New York Times and USA Today gave it glowing reviews, and it sold out in two months.

Ms. Hopkins is founder and executive director of Opera-tunity Foundation for the Arts, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit for the education and appreciation of the arts. Their 2012 event, “Week of Remembrance, a Celebration of Jewish Artists” earned her and the Foundation a Resolution from the House of Representatives and the Senate, and an award from the Cultural Council of South Carolina.

Ms. Hopkins is passionate about animals and animal welfare and is vice-president of Nawty Dawg Big Heart, LLC, a Philanthropic Foundation. She is a longstanding volunteer at Pawmetto Lifeline, a no-kill shelter in Columbia, South Carolina, and has co-written a children’s opera and coloring book/libretto, “Ecco goes to the Opera”. This project combines Westminster show dog Ecco D’oro and Ms. Hopkins, teaching children about opera and animal rescue.

Ms. Hopkins holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, cum laude, and a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance, cum laude, from the State University of New York in Potsdam. ARMEN SHAOMIAN, DMA, is an active concert pianist and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Sport and Entertainment Management (SPTE) at the University of South Carolina. In this capacity, and with his background in performing-arts management, he combines his artistic talents and business savvy to develop and teach courses in live-entertainment business, performing-arts management, events promotion, and family shows. He is the founder and CEO of Armenize, Inc., an arts-consulting agency specializing in nonprofit arts management and foundational strategies.

Dr. Shaomian’s prior work includes programs manager / associate producer for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) and its signature YoungArts program. In his role as their associate producer, Dr. Shaomian oversaw live-performance logistics as well as strategic relations with the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., as well as the United States Department of Education and the United States Presidential Scholars program. His work with the NFAA included cost analysis and contract negotiations, allowing the Foundation to save fiscally while raising the quality of its programming.

Prior to his work with NFAA, Dr. Shaomian was the managing director of Cat 5 Music Publishing and assessment manager at the Office of Accreditation and Assessment at the University of Miami. He also held the position of musical director of the critically acclaimed touring company, The Second City Theatre. Other entertainment work includes voice-overs for Disney and Warner Bros. feature animations.

In 2015, he was invited to perform a lecture-recital at the College Music Society’s International Conference in Stockholm and Helsinki. He has brought guest artists to visit his courses, including multi-Grammy and Academy Award winner Burt Bacharach, Pulitzer Prize recipient William Bolcom, and vocalist Joan Morris. Dr. Shaomian collaborates with arts organizations and the music-business world to bring together leaders from the industry and students from the SPTE program.

Dr. Shaomian holds Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Accompanying and Chamber Music with cognates in Music Business and Entertainment Industries from the University of Miami in Florida. JORDAN BARNETT is a freshman from Dacula, Georgia double-majoring in Piano Performance and Mechanical Engineering. He has been involved in music since he started playing drums at age three and piano two years later. His focus in music is playing jazz and Gospel styles. He serves in the Gospel Choir playing the bass and is a pianist in the Jazz Combo.

Two years ago, JINJIN CHEN moved to the United States to study at Auburn, and became a music major in her sophomore year, having only begun studying piano seven years ago as a teenager. In her free time, she enjoys singing and dancing.

YONGYU CHEN is a freshman from Changsha in the Hunan province of southern China. She has lived in the United States since 2017, studying at Auburn as a Piano Performance major. She began learning the piano when she was five years old and decided to major in music because she considers piano to be an integral part of her life. In her free time, Yongyu enjoys researching composers of the Classical period, and is especially interested in the music and life of W. A. Mozart because of his cheerful compositional style.

A junior from Tampa, Florida, EMMA BETH FISHER has been studying piano since 2001. She won awards in state competitions in categories of hymns and sight-playing throughout middle school and high school. Since enrolling at Auburn, she has participated in masterclasses and a two-week music festival in Vipiteno, Italy. Emma Beth is working toward a minor in the Korean language and serves as a music ambassador for the Department of Music.

Hailing from Anniston, Alabama, BRITTANY LEE is a freshman double majoring in Piano Performance and Chemical Engineering. In high school, she was named Outstanding Accompanist of Alabama for three years in a row and was awarded the Glenda M. Potts Music Scholarship. She has studied piano since she was five years old and has served churches as worship accompanist.

Pianist SARAH NIEDZWIECKI is a sophomore studying music education toward becoming a band director. A singer and horn player, she has been involved in Auburn’s Chamber Choir, Concert Band, Symphonic Winds, and Marching Band. In 2017, she served as one of the Marching Band’s mellophone section leaders and in 2018 will serve as a drum major. She is President of the Auburn chapter of the Music Teachers National Association; is brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Fraternity for College Bandmembers; and is a student ambassador for the Department of Music.

A sophomore from LaGrange, Georgia, CAROLINE SMITH is double-majoring in music and software engineering. She has studied piano since 2009 and throughout high school won auditions on tuba for honor bands and All State Bands. She is a current member of the Marching Band.

A native of Hebei province in northern China, JIAQI YE has been a student at Auburn since 2016. She began learning piano at the age of five, briefly stopping at age fourteen before beginning again at Auburn. She is an accomplished harpist, having worked with an orchestra and studied abroad before becoming a piano major. She currently focuses her musical career on composing and hopes to work with technical aspects of music production.
