“Myths from the Dawn of Civilization: From the Ground to the (Museum) Gallery”

Dr. Steve Tinney is Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology. At the University of Pennsylvania, he is also Clark Research Associate Professor of Assyriology, Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations; Director of the Pennsylvania Sumerian Dictionary Project; and a leader in the field of Digital Humanities. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Assyriology from Cambridge University, England, and a Ph.D. in Assyriology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
Dr. Tinney will discuss his work on the translation of Sumerian, the earliest written language in the world, and his reading of Sumerian literature and analysis of its functioning; he will also discuss making this literature accessible to a contemporary audience. A “Q&A” with our guest follows.
