In a special installment of Third Thursday Poetry, lauded poet Arthur Sze will read from his new book, “Sightlines.” Sze’s reading will begin at 7 p.m., following the conclusion of a 6 p.m. discussion by Sze and visual artist Susan York on the exhibition “The Unfolding Center: Art and Poetry by Susan York and Arthur Sze,” on view at the museum through Jan. 12, 2020.
“The Unfolding Center: Art and Poetry by Susan York and Arthur Sze” is a sequence of 11 densely layered graphite-on-paper diptychs drawn by York paired with polyvocal verses composed by Sze. The collaboration between poet and artist, which began in 2010, was released in the book “The Unfolding Center” in 2013 by Radius Books.
Known for his meticulous, difficult poems, Sze’s work has been described by critic John Tritica as the “intersection of Taoist contemplation, Zen rock gardens and postmodern experimentation.” Sze’s many awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Lannan Literary Award and an American Book Award.
York is a Santa Fe-based artist known for her reductive cast graphite sculpture and distinctive minimalist approach. Her works have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the world, including Milan, Munich, Berlin and New York. York’s art resides in the permanent collections of many prominent museums, among them the Museum für Konkrete Kunst in Ingolstadt, Germany, the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, New York, and the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
A book signing will follow the reading. Limited copies of “The Unfolding Center” and “Sightlines” are available for purchase from the Museum Shop. Luster, the museum café, is open until 8 p.m. with a revamped selection of food and drink.
Third Thursday Poetry is supported in part by the Auburn University College of Liberal Arts, the Auburn University Department of English and the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
