Dale Kennington: Paintings, Past and Present

June 13–September 26, 2009
Gallery C

Two exhibitions of paintings by Dale Kennington on view at the museum this summer highlight the remarkable artistry of one of Alabama’s most accomplished artists. Subjective Mythologies, installed in the Harbert Gallery, is an evocative series of painted folding screens, culminating a thematic investigation that the Dothan artist has been pursuing for several years. These works literally “fold together” physically opposing yet enigmatically related imagery to create poignant and sometimes unsettling tableaux.

In the adjacent Gallery C, a selection of Kennington’s work in a more conventional format—for the wall—offers a general survey of her richly narrative paintings, with examples from the past to the present. In addition to numerous exhibitions throughout the southeast since 1994, Dale Kennington’s work may be found in the permanent collections of the Belk Visual Arts Center, Butler Institute of American Art, Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum, Cheekwood Museum of Art, The Columbus Museum, Huntsville Museum of Art, Maitland Art Center, Mobile Museum of Art, Wiregrass Museum of Art, and the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.
