1072 Exhibition
Wadsworth Gallery
January 10—February 21, 2009
“Exhibitions come and go: they are what museums do.
Collections are slowly built and stay: they are what museums are.”
-Holland Cotter, New York Times
1072 Society
The 1072 Society exists to facilitate the growth of the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art’s permanent collections and to build upon the bold commitment of those visionaries who began the collection more than sixty years ago. The support of our members and friends is essential to build our collections as part of our future growth. Members of the 1072 Society contribute $1072, the amount originally paid for the 36 works in our Advancing American Art collection.
How will this work?
•Annually, professional staff of the museum will bring in a range of fine art that we feel will add a new
and important dimension to our growing collection. This year’s inaugural selection will be exhibited in the
Wadsworth Gallery January 10 through February 21, 2009.
•Your annual gift of $1072 will make it possible to purchase some of these works and you will have a vote
as to which art work you would like to see join our collection, thus participating in the decision-making
process and our growth. The more 1072 Society members we have, working together, the greater number of meaningful acquisitions we can add to our collections.
•Those pieces that are selected this year will bear the credit line: Purchased with funds made possible by
the generosity of members of the 1072 Society of 2009. We will acknowledge your membership each year in the 1072 Society in our summer newsletter as well as on a wall in the museum.
