Recent Acquisitions in the Permanent Collection: Works on Paper
July 18–October 10, 2009
Chi Omega-Hargis Gallery
Since its inception, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art has benefited enormously from the generosity of its patrons. The permanent collection has grown quickly, both through direct gifts of art and with purchases made possible by the support of our remarkable donors. The collection continues to grow, in breadth, depth and quality. Acknowledging such good fortune, two s summer exhibitions offer a sampling of the diverse range of objects that have recently come into the JCSM permanent holdings, and highlight a very important component of the museum’s mission.
Opening June 27 in the Wadsworth Gallery is a selection of newly acquired paintings, including works by self-taught, Alabama
painters Moses (“Mose T”) Tolliver and Jimmy Lee Sudduth; Catalan-born artist Pierre Daura; and Max Bohm, an early-20th century American modernist. July 18, we open an exhibition in Chi Omega-Hargis Gallery, featuring new additions to our
collection of works on paper. Augmenting this most rapidly growing area in our permanent collection—prints, drawings, and
photographs—are images by Jorge López Garcia, Lori Nix, Julian Schnabel and George Tooker, among many others on view.
These two exhibitions draw attention to the growing strength and diversity in the museum’s collections and celebrate the
benevolent spirit of our many supporters.
