John James Audubon’s Precursors and Contemporaries
through October 31
The Louise Hauss and David Brent Miller Audubon Gallery
Contextualizing John James Audubon’s monumental publication, The Birds of America (1826-1838), JCSM is pleased to present an exhibition of prints by some of Audubon’s precursors and contemporaries. To demonstrate the wide interests of eighteenth and nineteenth century European naturalists, the featured prints illustrate not only birds but also sea creatures, insects, snakes and plants. Artists included in the exhibition are Eleazer Albins (1680-1742), Mark Catesby (1683-1749), George Edwards (1694-1773), Alexander Wilson (1766-1813), and John Gould (1804-1881).
JCSM would like to thank The Columbus Museum of Columbus, GA and Gilbert Johnston of antiquenatureprints.com for loans that make this exhibition possible.
