Home School Programs at JCSM

It is almost time for the 2017 fall semester of programs at JCSM! This year, we are offering two ways for homeschool families to connect with the museum. Read about the programs and find links to register below.

If you are unable to join us, it is important to release your reservations, as we do anticipate a waitlist for these programs. Questions? Contact xoefiss@auburn.edu.

Art Exposure

Art Exposure classes meet on select Tuesdays once a month at JCSM. Classes focus on developing museum and visual literacy skills. Students will visit the galleries during each class and then work on a short project to extend their thinking and practice art techniques in connection to the gallery discussions and activities.

Students will keep a sketchbook throughout the semester. A take home sheet with suggested extensions to the topic and lesson of that day will be provided at the end of each class.

Grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade and Grades 6th Grade through 12th will meet for their own separate sessions. These sessions will be capped at 15 students to ensure a small student-to-educator ratio. Parents and guardians are invited and encouraged to join the artmaking and gallery discussions.

Register your child on Eventbrite. There will be a waiting list on Eventbrite that you can register for after the class is filled.

Homeschool Connection

This year we are piloting Homeschool Connection in partnership with the homeschool program at Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. Homeschool Connection will meet on select Mondays from 3:00-4:00pm and is free and open to all homeschool families in Auburn and the surrounding area.

Each day will focus on a mini-art history lesson for the first twenty minutes in the museum auditorium on a topic that connects to an exhibition currently on view. Then, for the second half of the program, families will be invited to explore the galleries together and try a suggested activity for the day. You will leave the museum with a hand out of an art project to try at home.

Homeschool Connection is a great supplement to Art Exposure at JCSM and Jan Dempsey’s homeschool art program. It is also a great way to come and add some art to your learning if you are not able to commit to classes at JCSM or Jan Dempsey, but still want to visit the museum and spend time with other home school families.
