State of Create Course Descriptions
Check out the works on view in Tamarind Touchstones: Fabulous at 50 – Celebrating Excellence in Fine Art Lithography, and then make prints of your own. Tools and materials will be sharp at this session.
Sculptures by Jean Woodham on view in the exhibition Full Circle will inspire us as we create small scale pewter castings. Tools and materials will be sharp and/or hot at this session with open flames.
Drawing is an essential skill for every artist, and only gets better with practice. This session provides a wide range of materials and papers to work with to explore the different drawing media artists use.
Papercraft has become increasingly popular in the past couple of years. Using templates and instructions we’ll make intricate folded paper sculptures, and for the real challenge, invent our own. Tools will be sharp at this session.
Positive and negative space are the name of the game today. Using a chemical etchant, we’ll frost glass with intricate patterns and designs. Bring your own glass item (cup size or smaller), or use the votive candle holders available. Caustic materials at this session.
Form a team with friends to create a large-scale mural on paper at this session. We’ll be working big, and making a statement with our work.
Some might call it cheating, but there are a lot of tricks that artists have used to make their work look really good. From the camera obscura to grid transfers, we’ll check out the techniques that make realism easier.
Let’s spend some time painting. This fun session with canvas, acrylic paint, and all sorts of brushes will let you explore the most popular art medium.
Designing print media is a huge undertaking. At this session, we’ll hand-design text, create folded brochures, posters, CD covers, and all sorts of cool stuff.
Using fabrics, yarns, and non-traditional weaving materials, we’ll make wall hangings and usable woven items today.
Photography has quickly become an accessible and fun activity. In this session, we’ll talk about the rule of thirds, contrast, lighting, and some of the neat manipulations of photography create really cool shots. Bring your camera if you can, or borrow one from the museum (limited quantities).
Special note: State of Create will not meet on July 5th.When registering, please select only the number of youth who plan to attend the session. Class sizes are limited and often these sessions are at capacity. Note that others may be on the wait list should you need to cancel.
