ALABAMA FOLK POTTERY
Alabama Folk Pottery displayed at Auburn University February 8 through March 29, 2008
The JCSM is pleased to announce that they will serve as the final venue for the exhibition Alabama Folk Pottery which has been featured at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and the Mobile Museum of Art among other sites in Alabama in 2007. The exhibition which opens on February 8 will be a slightly smaller version of the exhibition which originated at the Birmingham Museum of Art.
Guest curated by Joey Brackner, Director of the Alabama Center for Traditional Culture, a division of the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the exhibition features examples of the tradition of pottery in the state dating back over 200 years. The majority of the examples selected for this show came from private collections, but there are also pieces from the Birmingham Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA and the Gadsden Museum in Gadsden, AL.
The catalogue for this exhibition which is available at the JCS Museum Shop is a result of more than 20 years of Joey Brackner’s research of Alabama folk potters. The book is the perfect compliment to the exhibit, presenting a comprehensive overview of Alabama’s traditional pottery.
Tradition and history are at the core of this exhibit, but the artistic and visual delight aspects cannot be ignored.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the JCSM invites you to attend the “Southern Folk Pottery” lecture given by Joey Brackner on Tuesday February 12, 2008 at 4:00PM.
