MAY DAY

Come celebrate spring at the JCSM!

May Day festivities will be Saturday, May 3, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Children’s activities include paper making and printing, story telling, drawing, toy boating and kite making. Children will make paper from recycled materials provided by Donny Addison, who is the university’s Recycle and Waste Reduction Coordinator. The handmade papers will be used in art activities including printmaking and embossment.

A reading of Dr. Seuss’s book “The Lorax” will inspire students to protect the environment, and they will have the opportunity to create their own hand crafted trees that will be planted on museum grounds.

After exploring nature in the botanical gardens, students can record their observations on drawing paper to share with their family and friends.

A demonstration table of the effects of water and how pollution impacts the environment paves the way for experiments. Toy boats will be available for younger children to sail in the fountain while the older students learn how to make and fly their own kite.

There will be a unique African dance performance by Umdabu Dance Company that people of all ages can enjoy. Umdabu is a Birmingham, Alabama based dance theater dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional and Contemporary South African history and culture.

The day will finish with the annual favorite May Pole dance led by Umdabu on the south lawn.
