The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art to Participate in Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day 2008

AUBURN, Ala.--On Saturday, September 27, 2008, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art will participate in the fourth annual Museum day, presented by Smithsonian magazine. Museum Day is a day when museums and cultural institutions nationwide open their doors free of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors. A celebration of culture, learning and the dissemination of knowledge, Smithsonian’s Museum Day reflects the spirit of the magazine, and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based properties.

Attendees must present a Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day Admission Card to gain free entry for themselves and one guest to the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art on September 27, 2008. This Admission Card is available in the September 2008 issue of Smithsonian magazine or free of charge by going to the Smithsonian.com website and downloading the Museum Day Admission Card. For more details and a list of participating locations or to download the Admission Card, please visit www.SmithsonianMag.com/museumday.

Open since 2003, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University is Alabama’s only university art museum.  Serving as the gateway into Auburn University, the museum is home to many pieces of culturally significant art. The collection includes 100 Audubon prints, a rare group of more than 40 Tibetan bronzes dating back from the 14th century and works by important American artists, such as Arthur Dove, Georgia O’Keeffe and Lyonel Feininger. The museum rotunda hangs a three-tiered, hand-blown glass chandelier created especially for the museum by internationally-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly.  The beauty continues onto the grounds of the museum with fifteen acres of gardens, walking paths and water features, complete with an eleven and a half foot tall brass sculpture, Spinoff, created by Auburn alumna Jean Woodham.
