JULE COLLINS SMITH MUSEUM OF FINE ART SHOWCASES ONE-HUNDRED YEARS OF SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY
Visions of Victory Presented by Mutual of Omaha exhibited September 13 through November 29, 2008
AUBURN, AL—The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art will host Visions of Victory Presented by Mutual of Omaha: A Century of Sports Photography from September 13 through November 29, 2008. This exhibition brings together the two very different yet complementary worlds of athletics and photography by showcasing more than 100 images that capture some of the greatest moments in sports history.
Visions of Victory gathers photographs of sports-greatness taken by numerous photographers, some world-renowned and some lesser known or anonymous. Featured photographers include William Henry Jackson (1843-1942, one of America’s foremost frontier photographers and artists who had a studio in Omaha), Annie Leibovitz (an American photographer known for her images of celebrities including political figures, musicians, actors and athletes), and David Burnett (a well-traveled photojournalist who was recently named one of the “100 Most Important People in Photography” by American Photo magazine).
The photographic images displayed in this exhibit feature a wide variety of sports, such as auto racing, baseball, basketball, boxing, cycling, dirt biking, diving, figure skating, football, golf, gymnastics, harness racing, ice hockey, kayaking, rowing, sailing, soccer, steeplechase, swimming, tennis, thoroughbred racing, track and field and wrestling. Sports giants like Arthur Ashe, Wilt Chamberlain, Nadia Comaneci, Ty Cobb, Babe Didrickson, Joe DiMaggio, Michael Jordan, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Joe Namath, Cal Ripken, Jr., and Babe Ruth are seen during moments of determined exertion, enthusiastic celebration or quiet reflection.
The installation at JCSM marks the “final lap” for Visions of Victory on its tour organized by the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. The exhibition has traveled the country to other venues such as the Flint Institute of Arts (MI), San Antonio Museum of Art (TX) and Springfield Art Museum (MO). The JCSM presentation will also be augmented by a select group of Auburn-related sports photography, showcasing examples by some of the area’s superlative photographers.
The exhibition will be on display at the JCSM from September 13 through November 29, 2008. The museum is located at 901 South College Street in Auburn and is open Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 4:45 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM to 4:45 PM. Admission for adults is $5.00, senior citizens $4.00 and free for Auburn University faculty and staff (I.D. required) and all students.
