The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art Celebrates 5th Birthday with a Free Party on October 5, 2008

AUBURN, Ala.--The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is celebrating 5 years of service to the regional community by throwing a Birthday Party Celebration on Sunday, October 5, 2008 from 1 to 4 pm. Everyone is invited to come celebrate and participate in this day of art, activities, music and family fun.

The birthday party this year is themed “Art In Motion” with an emphasis on sports activities, in collaboration with JCSM’s fall exhibition Visions of Victory: A Century of Sports Photography and Alabama Tourism’s 2008 Year of Alabama Sports. Events around the museum and grounds will connect the past 100 years of sports photography with art, science, and movement. Children and young adults will have the chance to run races, explore drawing, look at cameras, and to curate their own mini-exhibition. Events are designed for each age level, and with relationships to elementary curriculum in a fun, meaningful way.

In addition to “Art In Motion” activities, participant will have the chance to try their hand at print and papermaking with internationally recognized printing press artist Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr.  Kennedy, whose exhibition Posters From the Black Belt will be displayed at the museum from September 20 through October 5, is a self-proclaimed “humble negro printer” who resides in rural Alabama. He will be helping the museum celebrate by demonstrating printing on recycled paper made from office waste at JCSM. Papermaking has been a summer-long project at the museum, to work towards reduce our waste and become a greener facility.

This celebration is free to the public and is an excellent way to become familiar with all JCSM has to offer. Live music will be provided by the Saugahatchee Ramblers and all attendees can enjoy the annual birthday cake. Be sure not to miss this day full of fun and games for the whole family.
