Auburn Alumna’s work exhibited at JCSM

AUBURN, Ala.- An exciting way to escape the summer heat awaits at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Two exhibitions of paintings by Auburn University alumna, Dale Kennington will be on view from June 13 - Sept. 26, 2009.

Dale Kennington: Subjective Mythologies, installed in the Bill L. Harbert Gallery, features a series of five large-scale folding screens. Painted on both sides of their accordion-like surfaces, the screen’s compelling images and distinctive forms beckon viewers’ attention.

In a statement for the Wiregrass Museum of Art, Kennington described her process, “I tend to paint things that are ambivalent, that are meant to be completed by the viewer’s interpretation, whether that viewer is the artist or another observer. We are each influenced by the intimate personal mythologies we bring to the work. In this series of screens I have used the formats of brokenness, duality and concealment to enhance the exploration of real and imaginary influences on our lives.”

Dennis Harper, JCSM’s curator of collections and exhibitions, notes, “The screens are a remarkable demonstration of this artist’s ability to engage the audience’s active participation to ‘complete‘ the work.”

In the adjacent Gallery C, Paintings, Past and Present, the museum has assembled a survey of works created by Kennington during the past 15 years. These paintings offer an enlightening view of the artist’s path to her current work, with subjects ranging from alienation, self-image and race relations.

Kennington will lead a workshop for high-school students July 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at JCSM. Topics for the day include how to harness the creative process, working as a professional artist, and painting and drawing techniques. Space is limited, and the fee covers lunch and materials. Registration and $20 per student are due on July 24. Call Andrew Henley at 334.844.8792 for details.
