The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts Sixth Birthday Bash
AUBURN, Ala.--The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University is celebrating 6 years in the community by throwing its annual Birthday Bash on Sunday, October 11, 2009 from 1 – 4pm. This year’s festivities will focus around the Elvis at 21 exhibition, and feature an Elvis tribute band: Young Elvis and the Blue Suedes.
Clips from 1956 films, advertisements, and television will be on display in the museum auditorium, and children will have the opportunity to take part in art projects related to 1950s technology, the work of artist Joni Mabe (also a featured exhibition), and try to learn those dance moves made famous by Elvis. There will be food and drinks along with guest appearances by Aubie and Miss Auburn University. Also participants can visit our featured exhibits: Elvis at 21, New York to Memphis: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer, organized in conjunction with Govinda Gallery, Washington, D.C. in the Bill L. Harbert Gallery and Joni Mabe’s Elvis & Friends: Glitter Mosaics in Gallery C.
Open since 2003, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University is Alabama’s only university art museum. Serving as the gateway into Auburn University, the museum has a wide-ranging permanent collection, which includes more than 100 Audubon prints, Tibetan bronzes dating from as early as the 15th century and works by important American modern artists, such as Arthur Dove, Georgia O’Keeffe and Lyonel Feininger. The museum rotunda features a three-tiered, hand-blown glass chandelier created especially for the space by internationally renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. The museum experience continues onto the grounds with fifteen acres of gardens, walking paths and water features complete with outdoor sculpture, including Spinoff, created by Auburn alumna Jean Woodham.
This celebration is free to the public and is an excellent way to become familiar with all JCSM has to offer. Be sure not to miss this day to eat some cake and shake those hips with the king of rock’n’roll. For more information, please contact the museum at 334.844.1484.
