Artist Talk: Tommy Coleman

Free and Open to the Public

Guest curator Tommy Coleman launches a challenging new series considering our fragile environment and efforts to restore it.

Through “Radical Naturalism,” The Jule invites contemporary artists inspired by nature to research our collection to engage with, question and critique John James Audubon’s evolving legacy. The 19th-century artist dedicated his life to hunting and trapping North American specimens, documenting the species of birds, insects and plants that he encountered.

Centuries later, Coleman a Florida-born interdisciplinary artist and educator who spends time in that state’s wetlands, observes and depicts the complex relationships between plants, animals and humankind.

The inaugural exhibition features more than 30 new drawings and sculptures and an unconventional installation of 16 Audubon etchings.
