Clementine Hunter descended from enslaved grandparents, while Bernice Sims was a civil rights activist. Their art, along with others in this section, memorializes their own experiences the work and play of life, their struggles and triumphs. African and American legacies are portrayed intensely, brightly and seriously with materials as varied as corrugated metal, tree branches, beads and pottery.
