Object Spotlight: “Autumn Walls of Jericho, Jackson County” by Beth Maynor Young

Beth Maynor Young’s photograph, Autumn Walls of Jericho, captures the serene majesty of one of Alabama’s most treasured natural landscapes. The image draws the viewer into a tapestry of warm, earthy tones—burnished golds, deep russets, and soft browns—that echo the seasonal transformation of the forest.

The composition emphasizes verticality and depth, with towering trees framing the scene like cathedral columns. Their textured bark contrasts with the delicate foliage, creating a rhythm that guides the eye upward and inward. Light filters gently through the canopy, illuminating the leaves in a way that feels almost reverential, reminding us of nature’s quiet resilience and grace.

Young’s work invites contemplation: the Walls of Jericho are not just a geological wonder but a sanctuary of stillness, where autumn’s fleeting beauty is preserved in a single, timeless moment.

Plan Your Return Visit

When the museum reopens after the Thanksgiving break, we invite students to our first Study Day event on Saturday, Dec. 6. Enjoy food, freebies and art while you find inspiration for your final exams.

The Jule will close for the semester on December 6, so be sure to see Binh Danh: Advancing American Art and Foreign in a Domestic Sense before they are gone!
