Museum collections are powerful engines for examination, broadening student experiences and preparing them for life. Object Lab is a hybrid gallery-classroom that connects The Jule to teaching and research across Auburn over the course of the semester.

Works on view, whether selected by museum staff, faculty, or students, invite extended engagement with the Auburn community, especially to develop multi-disciplinary inquiry. The project also empowers the museum to think differently about its collections. How do objects offer opportunities to interrogate histories of the African American experience?

Museum staff selected the works in this Object Lab in consultation with Elijah Gaddis, assistant professor in the Department of History at Auburn, who studies the spatial, material and cultural histories of the 19th and 20th-century South.

We invite you to visit the museum regularly to see this project unfold this Spring, as Auburn faculty and students consider ways of displaying and interpreting objects from the museum collection.
